I read a bunch about this. Russia state says 85% popularity for Putin. Independent polling says 65-70%. No matter what, Russians like the guy if only because he put a chicken in the pots and cars in the garages

They crave a strong leader that makes everyone afraid of Russia, they have a bit of a complex in that regard. But then they also don’t understand why everyone hates Russia. It all stems from their inferiority complex in regards to western Europe and their own conflict with their national identity as the backwoods part of a former Viking-ruled kingdom.
