Sheepdog doesn't care but is in too deep now and can't let @Lars win.

sparkuri @sparkuri started doing revisionists ww2 reenactments where he always plays Stalin and gives a speech about a future god chosen leader called Putin

Filthy @Filthy once drank Smirnoff and it was all over. He and Jimmy Dore are fermenting their own potatoes to get around the sanctions.
Sheepdog thinks the US and its NATO allies are very culpable for the deaths of so many Ukrainians.

That doesn't mean that Sheepdog in any way thinks it's ok for Russia to be killing these Ukrainians. Russia is a horrible place that can go fuck itself.

But yes, my main dog in this fight now is being right over some random Canadian guy.

I still remember sparkuri @sparkuri telling me about how Russia was so far advanced they had weapons that could shut down the electronics on a warship with just a plane flying close by.
Accurate statement, providing the plane ran out of gas and crashed into the ship's electronics.

A plane did a flyby of a US Navy destroyer in the Black Sea and to stop them getting intel from electronic emissions they shut down the ship as it flew over. I guess it was also to avoid appearing like a threat.

Ignorantly, I didn't even know the US had a naval presence in the Black Sea. I thought that access was severely restricted to bordering countries.

Turkey is a part of NATO.
Right. So are we there on their behalf given the current situation? It would be interesting to see a fleet list of what we have in there. Are we allowed to have submarines in there?

Turkey control access to the Black Sea because of their strategic location controlling the Bospros Straits. Turkey are norminally our allies so they allow free passage for us. At the time the destroyer was taking part in war games with Bulgarian Navy ostensibly to promote co-operation between NATO members, but may have been a show of strength/support. I don't know/think any US ships are in the Black Sea atm.

U.S. don't tend to ask permission for their subs to go anywhere.

Interesting read...

.

Due to Montreux Convention rules regarding the Bosporus and Dardanelles that connect the Black Sea to the Mediterranean Sea, countries that sit on the Black Sea have unlimited access. Nonresident countries may only send ships in for short stints and are limited by ship size. So although NATO is not intervening militarily on Ukraine’s behalf, the Black Sea was always going to be a vulnerable spot for Ukraine.

In other words, if there were ever a body of water well suited for bullying your neighbor, it would be the Black Sea.

Encircling the waterway are Turkey, Bulgaria, Romania, Ukraine, Georgia and Russia — three NATO members, two who want to join the alliance and then the nation currently invading Ukraine.

Only submarines from bordering, or riparian, states are permitted to pass through the straits, either to rejoin their base in the Black Sea for the first time after construction or purchase, or to be repaired in dockyards outside the Black Sea.
