“While the act speaks of advice, the advice we are giving is tantamount to a ruling. Public office holders have always accepted our advice,” he told MPs on the House of Commons ethics committee. “Advice is given to ensure public office holders are in compliance with the Act. If they do not follow the advice, then the recourse is an investigation.”
He said if the trip had been deemed improper the prime minister would have been required to disclose the trip publicly.
“As far as I am concerned there is nothing further.”
MPs can not accept gifts if they could reasonably be seen as offering influence, but there is an exemption for friends and family.
The resort Trudeau stayed at is owned by
Peter Green, who has been a friend of the Trudeau family for decades,. Von Finckenstein said claims of friendship are looked into and he had no reason to doubt this one.
“This is a true friend who has no relations with the Government of Canada.”

previously reported, Green’s sons, Alexander and Andrew, sponsored a scholarship, dedicated to their late mother Mary-Jean, on behalf of the Trudeau Foundation in 2021. Green has also previously donated to the Trudeau Foundation.
