to inspect the factories properly to stop this from happening again

or did you think it was going to produce extra baby food factories?
They could be using money to physically get more formula instead they're using it to fund something that wouldn't have prevented the shutdown.

from where?

you don’t think factory and product inspections and additional rule enforcement could have averted this?

hmm

Other countries that don't have shutdowns.

In actuality they could have just lifted their tariffs, but let's pretend they need to spend money.

Given that the 2 deaths weren't caused by the formula and that the shutdown was voluntary. No.

You can be as mean as you, bruv. The news is what it is. They didn't find the bacteria that the 2 babies died of in the factories.

Unless you're suggesting that FDA would inspect more often and because of that potentially linked deaths wouldn't still result in a shutdown?

James E. Rogers, PhD, director of food safety and research at CR, points out that cronobacter may still have been present in other untested samples of product distributed to consumers. And he says that Abbott’s statement on the genetic makeup of cronobacter strains found at the company’s facility and in sick infants is puzzling.

“I am not sure why Abbott would emphasize this fact because plants can contain multiple strains of a pathogen,” he says. “Just because the patient strains and those isolated so far don’t match does not mean that the patients were not, or could not be, sickened by cronobacter from infant formula.”

In an interview with Politico, the following words came out of Cassidy’s mouth: “About a third of our population is African American; African Americans have a higher incidence of maternal mortality. So, if you correct our population for race, we’re not as much of an outlier as it’d otherwise appear. Now, I say that not to minimize the issue but to focus the issue as to where it would be. For whatever reason, people of color have a higher incidence of maternal mortality.”

it happened this time because the manufacturer decided that fines were more cost effective than fixes. This entire situation is an abject failure of bureaucracy and the progressive solution is "more bureaucrats". GTFO with that nonsense.

My dad was the maintenance supervisor at a large food production plant, and the fact that you think the solution to the problem is "more FDA inspectors" tells me that you have absolutely no idea how FDA inspections/inspectors actually operate.

that's an entirely reasonable and pertinent public policy statement for a senator to make.

"the reason our incidence of infant mortality is high is because we have a larger population of the most at-risk people. So our solution is to focus our efforts on that group."

the click-bait reddit headline is fodder for morons.

“Race is a social construct, it is not a biological condition,” said Veronica Gillispie-Bell, medical director of Louisiana’s Perinatal Quality Collaborative and Pregnancy Associated Mortality Review and an obstetrician at Ochsner Health. “To say that ‘because we have a lot of Black people in Louisiana, that’s why our outcomes are bad’ is out of context.”
