I remember this video from years ago and could never find it again. Suddenly it popped up on my feed:

It's a late-stage body of water that has grown over with weeds and moss until there's a thick layer of vegetation floating on the surface that you can walk on, mostly. Trout hang around the small openings, but are real sensitive to the vibrations of walking, so you need to be a good caster to land it from a distance. At some point, it'll eventually grow over into a peat bog.

Just a really cool environment and a great catch on that guy's part.

That was sweet.

Big day in Waterton Canyon. Pulled 7 out of there today. 3 rainbows, which were all fighters, and 4 brownies.
Here are the ones worth posting.

Must’ve been the lighting or the camera settings maybe, but the rainbows’ stripes were a lot brighter pink in person.
The red spots on the brownies came out super red tho.
The only trout I ever catch are usually stocked ones that are half dead by the time you catch them so they don't have much color at all. IMG_20240904_191136501_HDR.jpg
I did manage to luck into being able to spend this evening and tonight on the Allegheny though.

Fishing trip to Vallecito Lake NE of Durango today.
Caught all kinds of stuff.
These were the best. Mrs Thunderlips snagged this pike, which is apparently a very small pike for the area, but we’ll take it.

Anyone else remember when there was almost a legit fight over someone making fun of someone else's homemade lures?

Meateater did a podcast on that event. I think with the guys who busted them.
They were pretty dirty and they dug into the dirt.

I enjoyed it.
I'll have to check it out. As serious as some tournament fishermen are it's a wonder those guys aren't at the bottom of the lake somewhere lol.

Any sac-a-lait, or strike out? Put dat on a cracka dood.
It was slow going and the crappie I did catch weren’t keepers. Caught 7-8 nice red ear but it wasn’t worth the time to keep & clean. Helene has the waters high here, which has thrown these fish off.

Caught my personal best crappie today. For reference, the cooler is 16” long. I didn’t have my scales with me but I bet it weighed 2+ lbs. Threw it back to fight another day.

Kept these though. Kinda wish I didn’t keep the one top left, which is almost as big as the personal best. You can see he’s just shy of 15 inches long.

I don't think I've ever seen a crappie that big before.

Do you catch bigger ones later in the year? Seems like the panfish I catch in September and October are always twice the size of the ones in spring and summer.

The stocked trout just aren't very healthy and struggling with adjusting to the lake/river?
