My new salmon slayer. I leave day after tomorrow to Van Island for some Chinook and Coho. Hopefully some ling cod and halibut too.

I have two memories from being a kid:

- My dad taking me to a catfishing spot one night. South Jersey, decommissioned wooden railroad bridge between two lakes. We laid out multiple lines and hopped across the crossbeams of the bridge to grab the poles before they were pulled into the water. Soon as you had one on the line, the next pole would start shaking loose. One night in particular, full moon, we caught 30-40 bullheads altogether. I remember the rig being one of late my late uncles'. Bamboo baitcasting pole, some cheap lightweight reel, and old-school braided line. Octopus hooks and squid strips, no weights. Just left it drift in the current.

- Throwing a line out from my aunt's dock into a lagoon off the Barnegat bay. Nothing all night. Before going to bed, went out to reel it in for good. Once I reeled in the slack, I suddenly pulled on something that felt like a snagged tree branch. A second later, this "branch" exploded in movement. Shook like crazy, not like any fish I knew of at the time. Finally reeled in a saltwater eel that was around 3 feet. Had a pale pink-grey color and slimy as all hell. I grabbed a rag and gripped it behind the gills only to have the damn thing wrap around my arm and slap me in the face like I was in a Tyler Knight video. I ran inside screaming about it. Can still picture my father and aunt's faces and laugh.

Those two events got me hooked. I don't get out on the water nearly as much I'd like to anymore. Every year I register for a license and swear that's going to change. Life gets in the way, I suppose.

What got you guys hooked?

My grandpa used to work for a telephone company on the west coast of Canada, it's big now but back then it wasn't.

Every fathers day weekend they had a fishing derby, and it was pretty big. Lots of great prizes, and was just a good time camping and fishing with my grandpa, grandma, mom, dad, and my uncles. I looked forward to that weekend even more than Christmas.

I remember trolling around the lake for rainbows, dragging a Ford Fender and a Flatfish. Sometimes the bite would be slow, and I would go sleep in the bow of his 1978 StarCraft, that he always had covered. I always did this when fishing was slow, and almost always I'd be woken up by my grandpa yelling at me "fish on".

Even to this day, I sometimes dream I'm at the derby, and it sucks when I wake up realizing it was just a dream.

My gramps passed away during covid, man would I love to go fishing with him one more time.

My grandpa was a big fisherman. He used to take me smallmouth fishing on the White River when I was a kid. Then he took me to Lake Okeechobee. Iā€™ll never forget those times. He got me hooked. I had stopped fishing for several years and played golf in my spare time. Those days are over. Iā€™m back on the water and loving it.

Catching a few this afternoon. Cold front has them scattered a bit.
