But I don't understand how they deliberated for four days and deadlocked on the reckless manslaughter charge, which has the higher burden of proof and reached a decision in less than a day on negligent homicide, which has a lower burden of proof.
We will probably find out but my guess would be there was one hold out and he/she came to their senses over the weekend.

If they couldn't find him guilty of the greater count (they couldn't) than they weren't allowed to find guilty of the lesser. When it was apparent the jury was deadlocked on the greater the shifty prosecutor tried to game the system by removing that charge. The judge should have immediately dismissed at that point but chose to play along. Blew up in prosecutors face anyway, showing that the citizens of NY are sick of this shit too.

Yep, the longer it went and then the dismissed lesser charge it was pretty much a given.

Heard a good point this morning "the process is the punishment" meaning that it's still a major deterrent to stepping up in the moment, people will still hesitate.

Yeah they mention this A LOT in Canada because no one goes to jail up here.. So the only deterrent we have is the actual legal process.
