Baby I Don’t Care – Transvision Vamp

Friday song of the day: Today’s song was a love song written by the band’s guitar player about the best friend of the singer.

Transvision Vamp was popular in England for a couple of years, but never really took off in the United States. The band was formed in 1986 by guitarist Nick Christian Sayer and singer Wendy James, and produced pop music with a slight punk flavor. They recruited three other musicians and released their first single in 1987 to little sales. Their first hit came the next year, when I Want Your Love went to #5 on the UK singles chart. A few more minor hits followed, and then in 1989 Transvision Vamp released their most successful song.

That was Baby I Don’t Care, the first single from their second album, Velveteen. The song told of a relationship in which the singer told her lover that he didn’t have to say that he loved her, she was just happy to be with him. Nick Sayer wrote the song about an actress he had a crush on, who just happened to be the best friend of singer Wendy James.

Baby I Don’t Care was released as a single in March 1989 and went to #3 on the UK singles chart, and also made the Top 10 in several other European countries. While it was released in the United States, it failed to chart at all. Transvision Vamp released their third album in 1991, had a few more minor UK hits, and broke up the following year. Several years later the girl who was the object of Baby I Don’t Care committed suicide.

It’s Too Late – Carole King

Saturday song of the day: Today’s song was initially the B-side of a single.

It’s not an exaggeration to say that Carole King is one of the greatest songwriters of the past century. She started as a staff writer in the musical factory of the Brill Building in 1958, writing hits for numerous other artists, usually in partnership with her husband Gerry Goffin. She was 18 when she wrote ger first #1 hit, Will You Love Me Tomorrow, which was recorded by The Shirelles. In all, she has written 118 songs which have charted on the Billboard Hot 100.

While she released a few singles as a performer early in her career, she didn’t really seriously pursue a singing career until 1970, after her 1968 divorce from Goffin. At that time she released her first album, Writer. It was well received critically but did not sell especially well. Then the next year she released Tapestry, which was a huge commercial breakthrough. Tapestry has sold over 10 million copies and is certified as a Diamond Album.

The first single from Tapestry was I Feel the Earth Move, with It’s Too Late as the B-side. I Feel the Earth Move did OK, but eventually disc jockeys started playing the B-side, which became a big hit. It’s Too Late is a moody song about the end of a relationship. Later pressings made the record a “double A-side” single, and It’s Too Late went on to reach #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song won a Grammy as Record of the Year. That same year, King won Grammys for Tapestry as Album of the Year and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, and for You’ve Got a Friend as Song of the Year.

King still writes and performs today. Her awards and honors are too numerous to list, but are topped off by the Kennedy Center Honors, awarded in 2015 for her huge body of work.
