I'm a Warren Ellis fan, he's a writer that generally combines some real-life aspect/science/news into his stories...

Many say his magnum opus is "Transmetropolitan" - most compare this series to Hunter S. Thompson. It's cyberpunk-ish. I've not read this. I will in time, i prefer his shorter series.

1) Global Frequency - sort of like a X-Files - GF is a private org that governments hire to solve crises which consists of 1,001 regular people who serve the GF. Each has a specialty: police detective, scientist, parkour enthusiast, etc. and depending on their physical location and the crisis that needs resolution, the leader Miranda Zero and Aleph (the computer hacker/dispatcher) will summon/call on various GF members to help. 2 tpb's. A tv series pilot was leaked on net and word is Ellis was pi$$ed, so he canceled the series.

2) Fell - about a police detective who is a good profiler/detective. only 7 issues or so has been published. Ellis' computer crashed and he lost the scripts to the rest of the series :(

3) Gravel - Ellis and co-creator/artists Mike Wolfer created William Gravel, a SAS sergeant who is also a 'combat magician' ... he uses magic to aid his soldier skills. often tasked by SAS to face supernatural threats. a bunch of mini's starting with "Strange Kiss" and then "Stranger Kiss" and then "Strange Killings" and maybe 4 more minis before Gravel got a 22 issue series in which he is a one of the Minor Seven and tasked by one of the Major Seven to find out who killed one of the Major Seven. Gravel in his investigations looks to be the King of Magicians of the UK. Will he succeed? This series is followed by Mike Wolfer's 4 or 5 issue mini called "Gravel: Combat Magician". Ellis didn't write this one.

4) Moon Knight with artist Declan Shalvey - lots of buzz around this 6 issues published circa 2014. These 6 issues is representative for me of Ellis' writing - compact scripts which allow artist to really get into drawing/storytelling. For me, it's hard to describe the magic and goose pimples i got from reading this.

5) Red = nothing like the Bruce Willis/Morgan Freeman movie which it inspired. CIA assassin wants to retire and live out rest of life in peace, but the CIA sends a hit team after him instead to retire him permanently.

6) Planetary - homage to the pulp and superheroes - this is a candidate for many fans for GOAT series .... John Cassaday's

random others:

Geoff Darrow's Shaolin Cowboy - minimal dialogue but loads of gore and Darrow's super-detailed artwork is a beauty!

Swamp Thing - Alan Moore's run - classic, another GOAT candidate

Sandman by Neil Gaiman - a candidate for GOAT series - about Morpheus, the Lord of Dreams

Animal Man - Grant Morrison's run

Doom Patrol - Grant Morrison's run

Invisibles - many call this series Grant Morrison's GOAT

New X-Men - Grant Morrison's run - some of the Fox X-Men movies used concepts from this series

Grant Morrison's JLA run (Justice League of America)

Brian Azzarello/Eduardo Risso's 100 Bullets - crime series - should be an HBO series soon

Astonishing X-Men - Joss Whedon/John Cassaday's run

Suicide Squad - John Ostrander's run, upcoming Will Smith based on this concept, like a 'Dirty Dozen' - supervillains working for the gov't on suicide jobs in order to reduce their sentences

Sin City - Frank Miller - crime/noir - i love noir, this series is beautiful in black/white, Miller is masterful in his art/storytelling

Scalped - crime series about an Amerindian police detective investigating crime on reservations by Jason Aaron

DMX - Brian Wood writing about near future and how NYC is a DMZ

Couriers - quick anime-type Brian Wood read - about NYC couriers who deliver non-traditional - rumored to be a movie sooner or later

Smoke and Guns - homage to cult film The Warriors .... 'cigarette girls' sell cigarettes in zones, and one of them gets caught selling cigs not in her zone and it's a night in her life as she tries to travel through various zones to get back to her zone to safety - would be great as an action movie IMO

Annihilation and Annihilation Conquest - Marvel's epic cosmic/space events ... Annihilus, leader of the Negative Zone leads his forces to try to take over our dimension... Silver Surfer, Nova and a few others protects our universe... this reads like an epic movie summer blockbuster!

Criminal - more crime/noir stories - Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips are excellent in this if you like crime

Parker series adapted by Darwyn Cooke - nice graphics/adaptations , Parker is a professional thief...

Rick Remender's Fear Agent - intergalactic agent; Uncanny X-Force; Deadly Class - set in 1980's, where do the Mafia/Yakuza/Triads send their children for training?

Walt Simonson's Thor run

Peter David's Hulk run

Mike Grell's Jon Sable, Freelance - about mercenary who moonlights as a children's books author and makes more money than his mercenary work

Mike Grell's The Longbow Hunters - parts of tv series Arrow is based on this

Mike Mignola's Hellboy

Loaded Bible - clone of Jesus Christ in future fighting vampires

Fables - what if Snow White, the Big Bad Wolf were real unbeknownst to the rest of humanity?

Mark Waid a longtime DC Comics writer on Superman always wanted to write a what if story about Superman turning evil... his Irredeemable is that story with a Superman-like character and obviously NOT published by DC

Sandman Mystery Theater - a 1940's detective series ... not related to Neil Gaiman's Sandman, DC had a golden age superhero called Sandman who had a gas that puts people to sleep, Wesley Dodd is the Sandman and he goes solving mysteries/crime ... great 1940's retro feel.

Luther Strode - 3 minis so far, 3rd is unfinished iirc - what if a weakling sent away for a Charles Atlas' become a strongman from a 99 pounds weakling type course?

Wolverine: Enemy of the State - what if HYDRA controlled Wolverine? they use him to hunt and kill the rest of the superheroes of the Marvel Universe but of course! Mark Millar's writing combined with John Romita Jr's art is full of epic action!

Wolverine: Weapon X - Barry Windsor-Smith's was the first to flesh out Wolverine's origin

Invincible - many say this is the GOAT superhero series - Robert Kirkman of The Walking Dead fame writes this ... this and TWD is consistently in the Top 10 monthly sales

Brian K Vaughan's Y the Last Man - what do you do if you are the last man on earth in a world populated with females?

Brian K Vaughan's Ex-Machina - what if a superhero is the mayor of a city?

Brian M Bendis' Ultimate X-Men; Ultimate Spider-Man = the Ultimate Universe is a modern retelling of the classic superhero stories that made the Marvel Universe; his Alias series - Netflix's Jessica Jones is based on this

Frank Miller and artists John Romita Jr's Man Without Fear - retelling of Daredevil's origin - netflix's tv series partly based on this

Hawkeye - Ed Brubaker/Matt Fraction's run, what does the non-super powered hero who is part of the Avengers which is full of aliens, a god, and super-powered heroes do in his spare time?

Jonathan Hickman's Fantastic Four run

Spent 2 hours typing this up between workflow - i have more reco's -- all off the top of my head/brainstorming ... ran the spectrum of superheroes to non-superheroes for you, enjoy!
Thanks for sharing. Knew y'all would have some great answers. Imma go check out irredeemable. :D

Where's the place to start reading Gaimans Samdman? I'm looking at The Sandman Overture deluxe edition but don't want to start in the middle somewhere. Also seeing Preacher so that might be today's purchase.

it's been ages since i've read Sandman, i have old man memory ... due for reread, so i just copied this off of wiki for you, i read from first tpb

looks like overture is published chronologically last as it's the 'newest' but it's meant as a prequel... perhaps others will chime in on if it's ok to read overture first or not

i would read them as it was published but will defer to members with better memory than me lol

The Sandman library[edit]
A total of ten trade paperbacks contain the full run of the series and have all been kept in print. In 2010, Vertigo began releasing a new edition of Sandman books, featuring the new coloring from the Absolute Editions.[59]

  • Preludes and Nocturnes collecting The Sandman #1–8, 1988–1989: Dream is imprisoned for decades by an occultist seeking immortality. Upon escaping, he must reclaim his objects of power while still in a weakened state, confronting an addict to his dream powder, the legions of Hell, and an all-powerful madman (Doctor Destiny) in the process. Guest starring several DC Comics characters including John Constantine, Mister Miracle, the Martian Manhunter, the Scarecrow,Etrigan the Demon, and the original Sandman. It features the introduction of Lucifer, with a cameo by Batman.
  • The Doll's House collecting The Sandman #9–16, 1989–1990,: Morpheus tracks down rogue dreams that escaped the Dreaming during his absence. In the process, he must shatter the illusions of a family living in dreams, disband a convention of serial killers, and deal with a "dream vortex" that threatens the existence of the entire Dreaming. Features Hector Hall as the Bronze AgeSandman.
  • Dream Country collecting The Sandman #17–20, 1990: This volume contains four independent stories. The imprisoned muse Calliope is forced to provide story ideas, a cat seeks to change the world with dreams, William Shakespeare puts on a play for an unearthly audience, and a shape-shifting immortal (obscure DC Comics character Element Girl) longs for death.
  • Season of Mists collecting The Sandman #21–28, 1990–1991: Dream travels to Hell to free a former lover, Nada, whom he condemned to torment thousands of years ago. There, Dream learns that Lucifer has abandoned his domain. When Lucifer gives Hell's key (and therefore, the ownership of Hell) to the Sandman, Morpheus himself becomes trapped in a tangled network of threats, promises, and lies, as gods and demons from various pantheons seek ownership of Hell. Wesley Dodds and Hawkman (Carter Hall) appear in one panel.
  • A Game of You collecting The Sandman #32–37, 1991–1992: Barbie, a New York divorcée (introduced in The Doll's House), travels to the magical realm that she once inhabited in her dreams, only to find that it is being threatened by the forces of the Cuckoo. This series introduces the character of Thessaly, who will play a key role in Morpheus' eventual fate.
  • Fables and Reflections collecting The Sandman #29–31, 38–40, 50; Sandman Special #1; andVertigo Preview No. 1, 1991–1993: A collection of short stories set throughout Morpheus' history, most of them originally published directly before or directly after the "Game of You" story arc. Four issues, dealing with kings and rulers, were originally published under the label Distant Mirrors, while three others, detailing the meetings of various characters, were published as the "Convergences" arc. Fables and Reflections includes the Sandman Special, originally published as a stand-alone issue, which assimilates the myth of Orpheus into the Sandman mythos, as well as a very short Sandman story from the Vertigo Preview promotional comic.
  • Brief Lives collecting The Sandman #41–49, 1992–1993: Dream's erratic younger sister Delirium convinces him to help her search for their missing brother, the former Endless Destruction, who left his place among the "family" three hundred years before. Their quest is marred by the death of all around them, and eventually Morpheus must turn to his son Orpheus to find the truth, and undo an ancient sin.[60]
  • Worlds' End collecting The Sandman #51–56, 1993: A "reality storm" (see Zero Hour: Crisis in Time) strands travelers from across the cosmos at the "Worlds' End Inn". To pass the time, they exchange stories. Guest-starring Prez and Wildcat.
  • The Kindly Ones collecting The Sandman #57–69 and Vertigo Jam No. 1, 1993–1995: In the longest Sandman story, Morpheus becomes the prey of the Furies, avenging spirits who torment those who spill family blood.
  • The Wake collecting The Sandman #70–75, 1995–1996: The conclusion of the series, wrapping up the remaining loose ends in a three-issue "wake" sequence, followed by three self-contained stories. Features a guest appearance by Wesley Dodds, and cameos by Batman, the Martian Manhunter, Clark Kent, Darkseid, the Phantom Stranger, Doctor Occult, John Constantine, and theBlack Spider.
The Sandman, written by Neil Gaiman and illustrated by J. H. Williams III, returned in October 2013 as a limited series. The six part prequel, Overture, tells the previously untold story that lead to Morpheus' capture by Roderick Burgess in the first issue of the monthly series.[61][62]

Oh yeah, if you like Gaiman's Sandman, check out Mike Carey's Lucifer series. Lucifer, the Devil, was intro'd in one of the Sandman issues.

Walt Simonson has an awesome Thor story right now Ragnarok. It's a more traditional Thor but I'm really enjoying it. The first trade is out.

Stickgrappler @Stickgrappler I just finished volume 1. Good so far, thanks again homie. :D
Cool!

I didn't finish reading Irredeemable yet :(

Forgot when Max Damage gets introduced... Waid has a spinoff series called Incorruptible ... Max Damage is the opposite of The Plutonian, former villain who becomes a hero. The 2 series has a 4 issue crossover later in the Irredeemable series.

It's already on my radar, a few friends mentioned they liked it. Thank you for mentioning it!

The concept that Simonson has a creator-owned series in which he tells his Thor stories that is NOT Marvel-owned piques my interest. Not burdened or shackled to the Marvel Universe may be very liberating for a creator.

I think that's why image is doing so well. Offering top level creators a venue to tell stories of their own.

Regarding Irredeemable, if Mark waid had been able to use the dc characters this is clearly based on, it would be a comic book goat nominee. Thanks again Stickgrappler @Stickgrappler.

Agreed up to a point, Image and its creators are pushing the envelope in the comics medium, telling all kinds of stories, within the tried and true superhero genre they are doing new things... and outside of the superhero genre, they are letting creators tell all kinds of stories

BUT

this is a big BUT

WTF is up with the delays/gaps between issues? If it's creator-owned, you would think they would want to continue to publishing without delay. I understand creators may be doing work-for-hire for Marvel or DC but dayum... ugh... some of the Image titles, i noticed they tell one storyarc and title goes on hiatus, so at least it's not a gap between issues within a storyarc.

Most of the titles I read take a break so the artists can keep up and not have to bring in fill in artists like DC and Marvel do. It's generally a three month hiatus between arcs which gives image time to print their trades. I always dread the breaks but it gives consistently great stories and keep the teams together.

That's why I'm usually the guy who waits until it is finished. I didn't with secret wars and was suuuper dissatisfied.

I've been defeated by a few books lately. Mostly down to time constraints.

This week I downloaded Banco, the follow up to Papillon.

It's superb. Not the epic that Papillon was but just as well written and as heart warming.

If anyone wants any ebooks, I've got hundreds of epub files that I can drop box. Let me know and I can out together a list.

Papillon has been on my long to read list ... a friend reco'd it, not so much for the story itself, but more for the escape plotting ... lol at me
