This bastard should get to work and stop playing around. He's not a university professor, he's not creating functional languages, he's surfing the Internet at his vanity theatre whilst playing with his miniatures. He's approximately 5'4" 300 lbs and pushing 70. If he dies before finishing the series I'll kill him.
That is a collection of books he had written years ago

Huh? I'm not referring to his asoiaf shorts, or comics, or calendars, or children's book, or RPGs,or games, or his editing and contributing to the never ending short story anthologies, or any other ancillary frippery. I'm purely concerned with the one thing I feel matters. The novels.
I guess I was insinuating he wasn't Tolkien.
I truly am just frustrated with him, I started these books in 2003 and it feels like it won't ever reach the finish line.
I apologize if I go off the deep end occasionally.

Too many comics to list but anything by Rick Remender is a must for me.
Not really crazy about the current state of superhero books but image comics is releasing some amazing stuff over the past two years or so.

I like Deadly Class so far after 1 tpb and didn't start Black Science yet. I like him from Fear Agent and Uncanny X-Men was phenomenal.

Paper Girls written by Brian K Vaughn (Runaways, Y the Last Man, Queen and Country, Saga)

I saw the cover of #2 in my LCS and didn't look carefully at first. See a female with a revolver and a katana. Also a walkman! The simple clean art with the vibrant colors attracted me. I picked it up and looked closer. It is not a katana, but a bike handle.

Flipped through it and read #1-3. Many who know me know I have little time to read, for me to pick up a comic and read 3 issues immediately says something.

This may not be for everyone here with the 12 yr old girl protagonists, but Vaughn's concept is intriguing. The mystery of the aliens or whatever TF is happening drew me in. Giving this a chance.

Here's the solicitation:

SAGA writer BRIAN K. VAUGHAN launches a brand-new ONGOING SERIES with superstar Wonder Woman artist CLIFF CHIANG! In the early hours after Halloween of 1988, four 12-year-old newspaper delivery girls uncover the most important story of all time. Stand By Me meets War of the Worlds in this mysterious young adult adventure, starting with a spectacular DOUBLE-SIZED FIRST ISSUE!

I've never read fear agent but if you liked that you'll probably like black science. He has an ongoing with Sean Murphy called tokyo ghost which is really good too.

Haha. Tokyo ghost is a mix of a lot and it continues Remender's trend of super personal stories in his creator owned books

Just started reading And the Mountains Echoed by Khaled Hosseini. His first book, The Kite Runner, changed my life when I read it (I was only like 15 and that book blew my fucking mind). I really loved his second book, as well, A Thousand Splendid Suns. Well, I got the new one for Christmas and really can't wait to get into it. Just started yesterday.

Anyone else ever read his stuff? Really emotionally gripping writing. He's one of my favorite authors. Wish he had more books out, but the fact it's taken him 10 years to write these 3 books shows when you read them. They are incredible. Such great attention to detail, character development, etc. He paints an amazing picture in every one of his books.

I'm so into this one already that I plan on going back and reading A Thousand Splendid Suns when I'm done. I've already read Kite Runner several times since I first got it at school back when I was 15, and I kinda know the story front to back. Whereas I've only read A Thousand... twice, with the last time being at least 5 years ago or so.

Again - anyone else into his work?

I don't know much about manga, but I'm pretty sick with my marvel/dc knowledge. What kind of genres you thinking? Action, drama, comedy, etc?

Lol there are a few. If you want to do manga, go with Lone Wolf and Cub or Path of the Assassin. Also Yoshihiro Tatsumi's stories are great slice of life stuff.

If you want something else, give us a sense of what you like.

I really enjoyed movies/shows like Samurai Champloo, Ninja Scroll, Ghost in a Shell, Death Note and others so I'm thinking about reading some now. I know there's tons out there and Lone Wolf is definitely one I'd start with.

I've never been into comic books much but I really like the art work so I bet a good story or series would keep my attention. Doesn't even have to be a comic character either, I'm seeing Walkng dead, Fable and all sorts of shit.

What's up with Gundam? I don't want something aimed of 12-16 year olds, violence and general wrong doings are prefered.

Ok, well definitely Lone Wolf and Cub then. One of the greatest stories ever told.

Besides that I'd say Preacher. It's a must read.

Also, I believe you're from Canada? Canadian creators are some of the best in the world. From team Canada:

Essex County by Jeff Lemire
It's a Good Life if you Don't Weaken by Seth
The Poor Bastard by Joe Matt
Louis Riel by Chester Brown
Scott Pilgrim by Bryan Lee O'malley

Other than that, there are the standard recos: Watchmen, From Hell, The Dark Knight Returns, Frank Miller and Brian Michael Bendis' runs on Daredevil, The Walking Dead, Invincible, Supergod, Transmetropolitan, Black Panther by Christopher Priest (but not by most of the other writers), Nightly News, Fun Home, Box Office Poison, Bottomless Belly button, Bumperhead, Optic Nerve, Punisher Max by Garth Ennis or Jason Aaron and Iron Fist by Matt Fraction.
