Looking for information on where to find 223/556 ammo deals. I don’t mind signing up for emails and waiting for sales. Need target and defensive loads. Also, what is you go to AR defensive load and why?
Sportsman's Guide is pretty good about letting you back order stuff. When it comes available you get an email for final order approvals.

Phenix, because they are OGers.

That's where 99% of my ammo comes from

I usally just use ammo seek or wikiguns and look at what's cheapest and factor in shipping.

For defensive loads for .223/5.56 it just depends on barrel length, and if I care about shit being barrier blind or not.

I've got like 11-12 Mags loaded for "social" purposes including a d60 drum full of 75 grain gold dot. Mostly 75 and 55 grain Gold Dot, and 77 and 75 grain BTHPs.

Tucked away I also have more MK262, the last of my blackhills 77 grain TMK, 75 grain hornady t2 bullet loadings, and various weights of Barnes TSX/TTSX loads lol.

Basically I break it down like this. Like any other bullet, does it go deep enough. Then, if it's a bullet that I'm depending on fragmentation as a secondary wounding mechanism, is it in its operational envelope for that to happen.

Too fast and you might see it neck immediately and rapidly fragment and not see very good penitration of the frag. Too slow and you also may not see good frag, although some loads are less susceptible to that like say 77 grain TMK which frags pretty well down to 2000ish or possibly even below FPS.

Now, do I care about possible over penitration concerns, and does my chosen load at what ever velocity its actually going, tend to stay with in the penitration maximums the FBI/IWBA wants to see to reduce the likleyhood of a shoot through.

Now, do I give a fuck about it being barrier blind, and being able to do all these afromentioned things well enough, when shot through an intermediate barrier like interior walls, auto glass and car doors etc etc.

Lastly, what does external and terminal ballistics look like at further distances if I care about that. Good TSX loadings tend to be pretty god damned accurate, but monolithic projos are fairly velocity dependent and don't necessarily expand and perform super well once you bleed a bunch of velocity off.

JSPs still tend to expand well at further distances, and you can juice that up a bit with more initial velocity with say a longer barrel and or a lighter projo. But they aren't all equally accurate.

Federals "FBI load" is a great bullet, and does quite well out of SBR lengths, but many lots of it tend to be kinda dog water accuracy wise I've noticed.

Where as say Gold Dot in the various weights, tend to be pretty accurate out of most guns.

Basically it all comes down to what do I want the bullet to be able to do, what velocities does it accomplish that job and how far away can it do that well out of my particular guns, and if I care about it, how accurate is it mechanical out of my gat.

Then you run into me stealing a quote from ughhhhh Chuck Pressburg? Very poorly paraphrasing lol but...

"If I don't care about over penitration, how much does anything of this conversation actually matter at social distances. If I'm shooting you 3-4 times a second you're in my home and presenting a lethal threat, does it really matter if it's gold dot, m193 or green tip?"

I forgot about the Phenix connection, thanks!

For sure! Basically you can make it as simple or a nuanced as you want. "Do sploody metal thingy go deep enough but not too deep from my boom stick"

Or you can nerd out and decide how many things, and how well the projo does at various velocities and distances lol and decide how many of those bases you wanna cover and is it worth the cost of the ammo for you to do so.

I've got 60 rounds of 75 grain Gold Dot not three feet from me because it covers all the bases I care about. I can shoot through stuff, it's accurate, and it is unlikely to cause a shoot through. But it's also not going to violently frag like say 77 grain TMK and cause nasty secondary wounds from that.

I've also got the 1301 stoked full of soft lead slugs because they blow big ass holes but don't tend to over penitrate through human beings lol. Ya boy likes options hahaha.

Odd question of the day... Some subsonic .22 rounds have no powder and a strong primer that's just enough to "fire" them. Legally, is a .22 rifle shooting subsonic .22 with no powder a "firearm?"

I made a different thread on this but what the hell, reminds of the tactical 30-30 mossberg was pushing years ago, which for the record I did not buy.

Wife wouldn't let me :(

The way that lever is does not look comfortable to me. It seems like the shooter isn't having problems so maybe it's just one of those things that look uncomfortable but in reality it isn't.

.223 lever only fills the need created by draconian gun restrictions, and even then, I argue a .357 magnum lever action s more effective for home defense and a true rifle caliber lever gun is more effective for homestead defense.

Is this thread strictly guns or can the stamp collectors among us also get in on this?

sorry if this isn’t the thread for this. I’m Just excited because I got two approvals yesterday. Just brought home my OCL Hydrogen S and GSL Pheonix.

I can start a new suppressor thread if ya’ll don’t want that here.

This is pretty much the everything thread. All things firearm related along with discussion about food, music, cars, I think we got on a 4 day discussion about different accents and saying before. Lol. We're just laid back and all get along.

Welcome to the thread. Congrats on the stamps. What are you putting them on?

Thanks! The otter creek is for a 6” 300 blackout I built. I originally tired running my Rugged micro 30 on it but with only like 3 baffles there wasn’t enough back pressure to run subs reliably. The issue was there’s almost no dwell time on a 6” barrel with pistol length gas so I got the hydrogen S. I’m going to move the micro 30 over to my best friend who is an RP on my trust and let him use it until he gets his own can.

The pheonix is for my MP5 and 5k clones.
I had a few conjugals with it while it was in jail and it’s super gassy so I may eventually get something like the CAT Mob which has reduced back pressure.

Yeah me and Arod argued about pizza for like 15 posts before we left the OG.

That's what makes this thread so awesome. There's never really a big fight or argument. We just all shoot the shit like we're hanging out in someone's garage drinking a beer.

I always felt like I was too late to the party to casually jump into the OG thread, but I lurked the ever living shit out of it.

I bought myself a superfluous birthday gun today:
