b) pop the breaker by shorting the wires at the switch with a screwdriver
c) work hot.

I turned the breaker off, I did not test with a meter. other lights on the same breaker turned off when I flipped it so I felt comfortable enough to proceed.

Typically A, but not above choice B if I need to

when we moved into this house none of our breakers were labeled properly. But I think all of them are sorted out now ?

I usually just touch the wires together. As long as I'm holding the wire at the insulation I figure I'm good.

But I've worked hot plenty. Only been bit a couple times.
