You're taking the product at face value. Most of the buzz around pro wrestling is the fandom itself. A lot of adults still follow out of blind habit as a result of watching as a kid. I guess some of us have a higher tolerance for cringey stuff. Personally, I can only stomach the first and last five minutes of their weekly cable show because most of their performers are shit. Certainly the top ones since CM Punk left.

I think this guy said it best...

Thanks for an answer Ish. I can see how of its been a part of one's youth and just continued into your routine as you aged. I'm surprised nobody has simply stated it a fun guilty pleasure, they had dreams of doing it themselves, they know people in the biz, they're a parent and its fun to enjoy with their kid...... I'm not here setting fans up for an arguement, I'm just here asking.

La Paix @BirdWatcher,

To expand on what I meant by the fandom being much more a part of the show than the actual wrestling, here's a video from a couple years ago where they crowd completely hijacked a segment on live TV to show support for their hometown wrestler, who had been constantly dogged by the higher-ups in the company for being too small and not having the right look. Audience participation is a huge part of the appeal for young adults. Unfortunately, that backlash didn't resonate powerfully enough because they're currently pushing one of the least believable guys on the roster while holding back all the guys who actually put on a good show. Vince is getting senile in his old age.

I enjoy it because it's entertaining to me. Its like watching a movie or a tv show. Seeing the acrobatics and stunts done by them are amazing. I enjoy the drama and the feuds. Right now the most fun i have watching raw is the new day, they make me laugh every time they are on. Add inthe wyatts, aj styles, formerly cm punk etc..

Ugh. New Day is about the only thing I find entertaining since Seth Rollins got injured and now that Daniel Bryan officially retired. You think they'll give AJ Styles a chance at the main event spotlight?

The "cringe worthy" acting in prowrestling is just your opinion. Nothing more. Thing is, no matter what your retort is, movies are fake and some cringe worthy acting( ie; transformers, tmnt, hunger games, etc etc etc) parralells the statement you made about prowrestling. Your not so subtle jab at us fans of it can be used for literally any medium that isnt real life or a documentary.

At it's best, when done right, Pro Wrestling can be just as captivating as any well respected network show, Daniel Bryan and Sami Zayne's paths to championship gold being the most recent examples. It's just not done right all too often these days.

The acting is horrendous. They find big, burly guys and try to teach them how to act. Sometimes it works (Rock, Stone Cold, Ric Flair, ect were all great), but mostly it's just unwatchable.

The in-ring product has changed a lot it seems, too. Less hard hitting, much more transparent. They rely on the camera work and strategic cuts to hide the mediocrity.

When you hear hardcore pro wrestling fans defend wrestling, they say things like "no, it's an art. It's story telling. Each match tells a unique story." It's nonsense, all pro wrestling matches fit into a certain formula. It's been done a million times.

lol. You've got a point there. They're so bad at it now. At least back in the day they'd use a wide shot every now and then. Today all they use is that up close, shaky-cam style.

That's a bad comparison IMO, but okay, I'll bite. I'll grab a random match off of Youtube.

What's the story being told here? How is it unique from what has been done in the past? What innovations did they add? What's the message? What's the value? If I'm wrong about wrestling I'll admit it, but I need someone to explain it to me.

Haha yeah it stinks, I can't remember if they did that stuff back when I used to watch 15 years ago, I never noticed it back then.

The matches are more exciting now but you cant beat a Dusty Rhodes unscripted promo. Go back and watch some of the old promos and how into it Flair and Dusty were and tell me those guys couldnt act.

My long ass reply to this disappeared. God damnit. Basically you're right. Not every match will feel inspired. Especially if you tune to a random match in the middle of the show. But the jist is that as cringey as it may seem to those who dislike it, the effective wrestlers do tell a story with each match. It's about the pacing, selling your offense, selling your defense, etc.

You'd have to use a more classic match to make example of good storytelling.

Was a huge fan of as a child, still enjoy watching the occasional NJPW on axs. Seems that japan has actual quality wrestling down to a science, America prefers soap operas targeted towards cuckolds.

Not to mention that well-seasoned forehead...

He use to cut vertical to get more blood. Listening to the older guys talk about where they kept their blades and how they would use then is very interesting. Getting color use to be a right of passage and meant you made it, now its not PC.

I've been sooo tempted to start buying shoot DVDs off Kayfabe Commentaries. Watched a really good one with Roddy Piper last week.
