Why do so many Americans reject socialism?

Every NATO member needs the US. That's why they joined NATO.
Did Turkey need us to get involved when it decided to shoot down a Russian plane? No, but it needed us to say that we have their backs because they're a NATO member.
Everyone in NATO needs NATO except for us. We just put it together to keep Europe from destroying itself for a third fucking time. It's worked out pretty well, wouldn't you agree?
The point is, we cannot cut 1¢ of our defense spending for healthcare or anything else.
I think there seems to be some confusion on what socialism is. Different age groups seem to have a different view on things. Younger American seem to like it more than the older generation who i think associate it with Russia and communism. I think its why many younger people are rooting for Bernie while the older people are voting for Hillary among the democrats.
There was a poll done last year in the states:

A funny interview took place on the Chris Matthews show. He interviewed the leader of the Democratic Party: Debbie Shultz. Chris asked her what the difference between a socialist and democrat was. She didn't know the answer to that question because there isn't one.

It's not for this thread but John Pilger wrote an excellent book called "new rulers of the word" which details how and why the US/Australia put those butchers in power in Burma. Good read.

I'm sorry I didn't read the thread, but my opinion of socialism as I understand it is "good will" programs regulated and allocated by government.
Communism and socialism sound great to me, in theory.
Except that it seems to actually achieve the opposite result, in eliminating the spirit of the individual.
