Most schools here have bullet proof doors that are locked at all times and you have to hit a buzzer outside and talk to someone inside (thats watching you on camera) before they'll let you in.

Our schools have all doors locked. They have a front door you have to be buzzed through. There, the staff are behind a window, you state your business and have to be buzzed through to actually get into the school. I am a sub nurse and have to show my badge and ID to be buzzed through. They also have armed policemen stationed at middle and high schools. They are working on elementary schools. Most of the time, the federal government will pay for these policemen if the law enforcement agency only fills out the paperwork for a grant.

Is this normal around your parts? If so that's crazy.

I'm going to put this out here before I listen to this podcast completely. A little experiment with BeardOfKnowledge @ConorMcGregorsBeard

Currently I'm against the death penalty. I didn't used to be, but I can't rationalize state power against its citizens that so irreversible and so final. The state is a corruptible and fallible entity.
Protect life liberty and the pursuit of happiness. The state has a responsibility to protect life. And I think it does that well through use of permanent prison sentences in place of the death penalty.

Logistically, I have not seen enough evidence showing that the death penalty is a deterrent. In fact, if used too often the death penalty may accidentally give an incentive to escalate lower-level crimes. I admit, the death penalty could and should be cheaper such that, the death penalty cost less than permanent incarceration. But even giving that, I'm not sure I should count cost into the matters of taking a life.

Morally, I don't think killing is an absolute wrong. We Justify homicide in the case of Defense, War, and currently execution.
But much in the same way my defense against the homicide is predicated upon fearing an imminent bodily harm, I have a difficult time rationalizing that I should kill somebody contained and metaphorically neutered in a box.

Now to the podcast... Let's see if I think I'm totally naive by tomorrow morning.

BeardOfKnowledge @ConorMcGregorsBeard

I've finished listening.
Which part of this made you feel that I would lean more towards supporting execution over permanent imprisonment?

I'm still processing the whole thing.

I didn't say I (or you) would support execution over permanent incarceration. I was simply pointing out that when it's pointed out that the purpose of execution isn't a severe form of punishment, or deterrent; it's simply deprivation of life. It glaringly points out that a lifetime in prison of the death penalty yield the same result.

You guys don't have to buzz into school's out there?
Not my kids school. It may be like that in some Vancouver area schools and Surrey bit I moved away from there for many reasons, that being one of them. My kids school now is sign into a log book and display a badge. High schools don't have the things Wild and SK described.

School's here will only have the front door unlocked, or all of them will be locked and you have to buzz in. There were no incidents that lead to this, the government decided it necessary for "public safety"

Having specific doors locked at certain times doesn't seem crazy, I don't take issue with that. My kids school has it's main entry open at all times but the rest are locked from the outside. It's the armed guards and bulletproof stuff that would tell me it's time to move or not go in the first place.

I have issue anytime the government creates a solution and then goes around finding a problem to apply it to. Particularly when they're doing it to scare citizens.

It's just the next step down the line.
