It's situational dependent.

I would never address someone as Chinese unless I knew them and knew them to be Chinese or else why does their being Chinese matter? It's kind of rude to talk about a person's alleged ethnic group if you don't even know them.

When a stranger just yells something about China when you walk by It's used in a negative way. It's like calling someone a Jew or some other inappropriate term.
I call people Jewish all the time, especially chinese men.

Ok I'm bored of this now. I've tried to discuss it rationally but you're being obtuse.

If you say that calling someone "xyz" nationality/race is derogatory again, I'm going to pink you.

Something I was wondering was that if you say a racial epithet, did you commit a crime against everyone in that entire race? I read Dennis Rodman's book when I was a kid and I remember him saying in the NBA dressing room everyone said the N-word including white guys and everyone was cool with it. So was it okay for Larry Byrd to use it in that context where the black people in the room were cool with it, or should they just not use it at all?

I use it with good friends. I have a black friend from Nigeria who objected to my usage of it so I stopped. I have a lot of female friends that I address as bitches. If anyone would have a problem with it I trust them to tell me and I will regulate my speech accordingly. I honestly don't have an issue addressing ladyboys with female pronouns, however I am not gonna call some butch booty warrior she.

Are you asking for opinions? You'll always find someone who disagrees with you, no matter the topic. If no one is offended, who cares?

Don't get recorded and have it sent to your employer though.

FWIW, my friends and I are hugely racist in private but it's understood it's a joke.

Yeah I guess that's what I mean, kind of "if a tree falls in the woods" kind of thing.

Lets say for example Larry Byrd and Magic Johnson are hanging out and Larry uses the N-word because they have a relationship where that's acceptable between them, has Larry done something wrong? And in the event someone records Larry saying it in that private context, does he owe black people everywhere an apology?

I'll pass.
Never cared for the guy. Great rebounder though.
I read it when I was 12 or so. He talked a lot about fucking Madonna and how she was obsessed with having a black kid because she felt it would be the perfect specimen or something.

Further solidifying my decision to pass on his written thoughts.

I am a proponent of common sense. A friend of mine can call me a reindeer fucking, alcoholic. If you're not my friend that's likely to involve me correcting the person. Probably happens every time I am with an Asian girl here. If it's a passing comment I ignore it. If someone who knows me calls my friend a gold digging whore I tend to get physical. Has happened once in 8 years.

You agreed the old lady probably meant it in a racist way. If it was racist in that context, then how is it not derogatory? No I'm not being obtuse. I'm Asian and I find it incredibly offensive if someone calls me Chinese. Not for being mistaken as looking Chinese but associating me with bad stereotypes of that group.

Everyone knew each other and It was used in a code like speech between buddies and It's not some stranger yelling it on the street. Context is important.

Even though I feel offended I don't think someone is not entitled to their beliefs and thoughts no matter how bigoted and rude and unfair.

Like I said, I can't blame her for mistaken me as Chinese but still !
