National service would do many well and surely somebody is interested in societal obligation as you are understands the importance of funding things like the Peace corps and service corps of America.

There's a difference between societal obligation and complusory service to which your future employment is attached. It's also much more likely to be used as a manpower resource for occupation with regards to how the U.S. military is currently operating. It's also one step along the way to citizenship requiring service.
