The usual route to an officer’s commission includes four years at Annapolis or another military academy or months of intense training at Officer Candidate School. I'm direct commissioned. Why? Because The military doesn't make enough of me. I have a wartime critical specialty and they need me. They need me so badly that they are willing to let me in when I'm too old and even wave medical injuries to use my skillset.

The route exist. The route is little used because not many people have these specialty skills needed for the path. The path purely exists for this reason.

The references to the highly politically connected are ridiculous. Pete is a mayor of a small town that would hardly profer the credentials described.

He had a needed skill set that the Navy had a hard time filling or training enough people for. He was so needed that they direct commissioned him just like doctors and jag officers.
This article is ridiculous.

I'm so impressed with Biden. Here he is at a busy function and managed to take the time to do a standard abdominal exam on this lady who's obviously in distress. None of the other people seem to notice her obvious symptoms except Biden who immediately jumped into action and is probably holding her spleen together at that very moment saving her life..
