We are being told to avoid using this type of device. It aerosolizes the respiratory droplets and the patients that need support are crashing relatively quickly according to the Seattle intensivitists. Early intubation is the guidance so far for patient care and to not contaminate your whole staff.
I will be watching this but this is against the guidance we are getting here in the USA.

I don't know if this alleviates the problem but on tv today they were saying the tube doesn't go as far down. It's less invasive so maybe the mask can fit on tighter?

No tube. Just a high pressure mask strapped to the face. This is a common intermediate device for a patient that needs some temporary support trying to keep them from being intubated (tube down airway).
Patients regularly mess with them and leaks happen anyways with major risk to aerosolize the droplets and make them temporarily act like an airborne disease contaminating far distances in the patients room, including staff if they aren't suited up with an n95 or greater.
They make reference to a helmet. This is seen in Italy for just increased oxygen but I've not used these plastic helmets in the USA. That would help. You put a cover over the entire head so any leaks spray and contain in the bubble over their head. We don't have these and I'm not sure we are ordering them.
