I read early on that is has the potential to cause mental issues in otherwise mentally healthy people. It’s one reason I was so skeptical when Trump was pushing it. I kept thinking of the people that survive the disease but suffer mental issues for the rest of their lives.

The problem is that the muppets ran chloroquine rather than the safer hydroxychloroquine. It's already well established that chloroquine can fuck people up, so there was no need to reaffirm that.
It does seem, despite misleading headlines, that there is some overall benefit of people taking hydroxychloroquine. Almost all the studies seem to show a small average positive effect. The problem is that it seems only marginal, and for most people the potential side effects of it are more dangerous than getting the old Wuhan AIDS in the first place.
It's like smearing shit all over yourself to discourage muggers while walking through a slightly bad neighbourhood. You probably weren't going to get jumped anyway, the shit may not do anything to stop you getting mugged and there's a good chance you'll get really sick from covering yourself in shit.
