Fortunately I live in one of the three Florida counties that has not allowed bars to reopen. I can't even imagine how much worse it would be if my area, containing the three most populated counties in the state, had allowed bars to reopen like the rest of Florida.
Miami should definitely keep bars shut right now, but for a lot of places it's a big dilemma.

Melbourne went harsher on lockdowns than the rest of Australia (even though Sydney and Brisbane were worse off initially), and all we have to show for it is now being the only place in the country that still has coronavirus spreading in the community. Now we are pressing ahead with bar opens, even though cases are about to start ticking up, because it's just too damaging to keep going with them.

I'd still rather be living where I am than most of the world, but it's frustrating as shit to live in a place that is the only place in a country that hasn't and won't clear it after getting so close. I almost preferred it when everyone was just getting dunked on.

The bar owners' gripe is that places that serve food have been allowed to open, even if it's just a bar that sells hamburgers. They also complain that authorities aren't enforcing the (50%) capacity restrictions and the social distancing requirements by which restaurants are required to abide.

They've got a point, but I don't see how "allowing bars to open, too" is a viable solution given the current state of things.

It's the same rules here and they are about to relax it for bars that don't serve food. Miami shouldn't be making changes given the scale of the recent surge in cases.

Going to bars right now is utterly shit anyway. I went a couple of times with mates when we had almost 0 daily cases and it seemed like you could relax a little. Because you could hardly 'relax' like you normally would, as all the restrictions make you feel like you are visiting a high-risk sex offender in prison. And I imagine if there is significant community spread, it's 10x worse.

Is it it a tenable course long-term? No. But if effective treatments/vaccines emerge, then it will prove to be the much smarter decision.

It's like a 5-round championship fight and we've just finished round 3. The Swedish herd immunity approach might ultimately stage a comeback and win, but right now New Zealand is up 3 rounds and headed for a decision.

Kiwis can go to bars and shops without even the slightest worry right now. That will do wonders for the domestic economy. Sweden has proven that a relaxed approach doesn't work, because your economy still gets fucked and it delays your ability to open up properly.
I think NZ played a blinder but it’s a lot easier when you have a sensible pm and your country is one of the most remote in the world.

I think we will all look back in five months ago and look at the wrecked economies, the hoards of broken, terrified people walking about scared of their own shadow, school kids of all ages with mental health problems and huge gaps in their learning and social skills, historical high unemployment and high streets where most of the shops, restaurants and pubs are boarded up and say.

was it worth it?

The current stats in the UK say the average age of someone dying of covid in 80. 78 for men and 82 for women. And that includes the younger ones who have died because they had underlying conditions such as diabetes and obesity.

The real cost of this pandemic hasn’t even started yet.

I predict there will not be a second wave as well.

we should have shielded and protected the vulnerable first then allowed others to make their own decision

literally one in three people I talk to now are pretty sure they had a case of the corona. And out of those only 2 got it bad. That’s obviously not a proper survey but anecdotally it does tell a story.

You can't shield and protect the vulnerable while allowing others to make their own decisions. Let's also be clear that when we are hand-waving younger people with say diabetes dying - suggesting they are inferior and their lives are expendable because of a medical condition that is often very manageable and under normal circumstances wouldn't prevent them from living long lives - we are edging towards the types of eugenicist arguments that used to be reserved for Munich beer halls in 1923. These are extremely dark moral arguments (disclaimer: I do not have any underlying conditions myself, apart from my latent homosexuality).

Now, I have gone back and forth on these arguments myself. Because I am a piece of shit, and I will admit it. But let's be honest about what we are saying.

Most of the lingering economic damage that will occur will also be entirely self-inflicted, because of the retarded way that we choose to organize our societies. If we can't manage a pandemic, then maybe we should all go fuck ourselves and die of ebola instead.

Also, if this pandemic 'breaks' anyone, then maybe this is really the way Darwin is at work too. Maybe some cunt with diabetes is actually the 'fittest' because he can stay inside for a few months without hanging himself.

So you're saying my idea of camps for the vulnerable is a bad thing?

Not to be outdone by Florida (a little under 3,000) and California (a little more than a little over 3,000), the state of Texas reported nearly 4,000 new cases today.

That's three states with 40% of new cases despite having only 27% of the total population.

I want to be clear that you can't beat us on this one.

Gonna get tested on Friday. Hopefully I bring the infection rate down
As a stable genius would say, I hope you test very positively. I hope you test positively towards the negative, right? I hope you test perfectly, meaning you test negative...positively towards the negative.

As a stable genius's opponent would say, I'm gonna get tested? For what?

Anyone else notice we haven’t had to deal with any pronoun nonsense since this all began?
It is important to find the silver linings.

Another +2,500 day for my home state of Florduh. Positive test rate was actually higher than yesterday, when we set the record for most cases reported in a day.

My county (Broward) is one of two that has not moved to any form of stage 3 of the reopening process, which would include bars. Broward bartenders held a rally yesterday asking to reopen, which was an absolute waste of time given the current state of affairs:

Do the people in your county actually know about the new number of cases?
Or do they just not GAF?
Or can they not read?

They're frustrated because bars that sell food have been allowed to open at 50% capacity. I get that. They also say that the restaurant bars are not following that 50% mandate.

But I mean look at what happened in Jacksonville on literally the second night bars there reopened. 15 or 16 people got the rona.

And bars and nightclubs are just not a place where social distancing can be observed. I once got so shitfaced I made out with a homeless chick in one of the bars at the rally yesterday.

I understand the bar owners' desperation but it's just not possible right now.
