Sounds like a solid plan, you should really get a boat. It's really not that bad as far as maintenance and stuff like that. The biggest time suck is when you initially get the boat and want to get it set up exactly how you want. After that just take care of if when you are done and it's not all that much effort. It takes me less than 5 min to launch the boat, let the motor warm up, and park the truck...And that's when I do it by myself. When my wife is there is take about 2-3 minutes.
Perhaps I’m watching the wrong guys load/unload their boat. My float tube is as easy as toss it on my back with the backpack style straps it has on the underside and walk to waters edge, toss it in, pit my clippers on and go. Watching my dads buddy drag his 10’ from truck box, get a guy or two to lift and wake it over along with oars, electric motor, battery, and the rest of his rods and tackle was just annoying to see lol. When day was done I’m packed up in a minute while he’s doing all that shit again. I’ve seen a bunch of other people do the same procedure too. I’m sure it’s easier if you trailer it in as everything can stay in it’s place but I’ve been to lots of lakes where that just isn’t an option. If I start fishing bigger lakes then I’m getting a boat with trailer or some better system for hauling on top of truck with a winch rack and she’ll package on boat but that’s expensive and I have no desire to troll deep waters all day. I find that kind of fishing quite boring. I’ve turned into a fly rod trout snob I think. My next big purchase is some nice breathable waders so I can hike rivers and streams without sweating my ass off in my current neoprene waders. No boat, just my rod and stuff to catch and cook.

What kind of truck do you have? I assume is 4wd?

People watching at the boat ramp is a blast, best people watching around.

Breathable waders are awesome, it's all I will run now. I can get my boat set up at the house fairly quickly, I assume a few more minutes than what it takes you to get your current set up into the truck and on the move. The longest part for me is cleaning the boat after I get it all muddy because I was hunting. But I typically pull up in front of the house, hook up the motor to a hose to flush it, while thats going on I move the shit into the garage and clean fish or take a shower. When thats done turn off the water and i'm good to go. I'll sometimes hook a charger up to the batteries but it's not needed all the time.

That’s sounds quite manageable indeed. Another import factor is that I’m currently in a townhouse. We just sold and are out in two weeks but are renting a nice vacation property lake front until we know where we want to buy. Anticipating housing market to crash/dip so we’re being patient so we can get something with some room for boats and RVs. I drive an F250 super duty now. Not ideal for brush whacking but I love the truck for lots of other reasons.
The best people to watch at boat launches are the inexperienced bicker couple. I swear a divorce lawyer could pick up so much work at those spots.

Man, I donno what your laws are but just back the trailer into the lake at any point you choose, I have launched a boat in a flooded ditch before lol, boat ramps are optional.
We are currently renting a covered spot for our boat, it's not ideal but I don't have to leave the neighborhood to get it. If you are getting lake front property just tie it off on the shore when you arent using it, hell you could even pull it up out of the water if you wanted.

Man the funniest boat ramp story I have recently is a dude who had no motor on his big fiberglass boat except for a little trolling motor on the front. You could tell he was frustrated and just wanted to fish. He wasn't strong enough to winch the boat all the way up on the trailer so he was just punching the gas and slamming on his brakes lol The boat would slide forward, then bounce back off hahaha

Another time we watched a guy try to launch his boat when the water was real low, he got into the mud and got stuck for a bit, and his truck was 2wd. My wife pulled our boat out in her nissan rogue that she had at the time, you could tell the guy was pisssssssssssssed.

One thing to keep in mind is an aluminum boat will be much less maintenance intense and also lighter, 2 things that will benefit you.

Meh... I bought into the hype but overall wasn’t happy enough to keep it long term. It was more about not suiting my needs. It was an 06 four door short box 6 speed manual with 33s,minor lift, canopy with 165,000 one on it and it sold for $195,500 which is crazy. I’d average 400kms to a tank, 370 in winter probably due to more 4x4 use and climbing mountains for boarding. The things I initially loved at first became problematic like the smaller size. I tow a work trailer often and we’re getting another travel trailer early spring so I’m loving the diesel again. The Chevy I assume you’re referring to was my 08 Duramax that took us around the USA. Those GMCs sure ride nice.

oh and here’s something about my gen of tacos I hated. Check out the fan controls here.

When the fan is off it’s pointing at 10:00 lets say and not 12:00. Are you fucking kidding me? What kind of moron designs that? When all controls are set to off its should look uniform. This is how any sane person would’ve made every single dash with similar layout.

I'm going to ignore for a second that aesthetically the second example is an abomination, but since when is "1" off?
The off option is on the far right. The worst thing about the Tacoma’s is the bland interior. It’s really underwhelming considering the price they hold. Second worst is fuel consumption. Mid size truck that chugs fuel worse than a full size.

So if you're alternating your defrost between off and on, you need to sweep the dial all the way each time?

Toyota sells steak, not sizzle. Always has.

No, just 90* clockwise from off.

Refere to the second dash I post as an abomination then defend Toyota for selling boring interior at twice the cost. K.

I know what I paid to fill up and measured every tank. The Taco destroys fuel and doesn’t give you any useful power in exchange. I average 150kms more in my super duty at a similar fill price and can haul almost anything.

I get pretty shit fuel consumption rolling on 32s with sliders and Trd skid, but it got better with the tune. I get about 20-21 mpg now when I actually drive it further than 3 miles.

But yes the Tacoma never has been flashy and that's really not what it's about.

I bought my Duramax because we knew we’d be inside it travelling lots so comfort and all the nice options were a priority. My truck now is nice enough for me inside and and out but not so nice that I’m hesitant to use I for work or 4x4ing for fishing and camping. I’d would’ve been happy if I could’ve made my taco work for me but it was just too small. I’d test drive a newer one in the future when kids are out of the house perhaps.

I'm holding out for the new Tundra, I almost ditched my Tacoma for an f150 a few weeks ago.

My mileage is somewhere around 23. I know Tacos don't get the "good mileage" some people think they should, but this is the first claim I've heard of them being objectively worse than a full size.

Damn, I never got anywhere near 23 in my 2010 TRD 4x4. I had +1 size taller tires than stock, but that was a mild increase. I averaged 18-19 on mostly highway tanks, but with city driving here in Austin I usually averaged around 15-16 overall (mixed highway and city).

my full size now gets 23 highway and on nixed tanks I get 19+ now. On right conditions and cruise I can get highway up to 25 sometimes.

I like my taco for a lot of reasons, but it sucked with a car seat for us. I couldn’t even sit in the front passenger seat with the car seat installed behind it. At the time, that was our “family” and travel vehicle, so I upgraded to full size mostly for comfort reasons.

Our experiences sound very similar. I mean I just posted the worst things about it was the gas chugging, shitty controls layout and it simply didn’t suit my needs. Solid truck but still valued too high overall.
