I saw two Golden Cheeked Warblers today on one of the conservation easements we work on, and also heard others farther away singing

I see them each year but still kind of cool I suppose, as they’re one of the two species of local endangered songbirds. Only around in the spring, so there’s a little window each year to observe them.
I didn't actively look this year bc of covid, but I'm going to try to see some ruby-throated hummingbirds next winter. They're here from late November to the end of February.

I ended up going outside and shaking the tree. He fucked off long enough for me to fall asleep. Probably to right outside someone else's window.

I could only take so much of this shit:

I'm still going to laugh when the annual "mockingbird attacks people who get too close to its nest" story comes out.
mockingbirds are crazy. Around here I see them ganging up and chasing doves off, or attacking neighborhood cats.

lately I’ve had a mating pair of Cardinals hanging out in my yard in the mornings. I prefer them to Mockingbirds!

Those are cool. They’re around here too, but I don’t see them all that often. One of my neighbors used to have a bunch of attractants set up and we’d see them more at that time.
We take our son to a facility here called the Wildflower Center where they have all kinds of awesome various vegetation communities and trails. That’s a good place to spot them here at the right time of the year

I've had a grackle fly over my head when I unwittingly walked by its nest, but it was nowhere near mockingbird-level aggression.

Last year some people in a beachside condominium building were trapped in a communal bathroom because a mockingbird had built its nest in a nearby tree and was dive-bombing everyone when they walked out lol.

I don’t like grackles, we have so many of those fuckers here. They are everywhere, and in huge numbers.

but again, technically protected under MTBA ??‍♂

we could honestly do with far less of them.

I didn’t take any pics today (these birds are pretty small anyway, kind of hard to get a pic up in a tree)

but this is what our endangered Golden Cheeked Warblers look like. Cool little guys

They are one of the dumbest fucking birds I've ever seen. Blue jays and red-bellied woodpeckers have learned how to get my attention when I'm outside so that I throw them a peanut.

A grackle wouldn't be smart enough to open a peanut but it never gets that far anyway. If I throw one in its directions it flies off because it thinks I'm throwing a rock at it. Literally every time I've tried.

It’s crazy how many we have here. Around sundown you’ll see them packed in as many as can fit across power lines at intersections. Or at places like grocery store parking lots where there are literally hundreds and hundreds all over the roofline, trees, and roaming all over the parking lot. If you park in the wrong spot for too long, you’ll have bird shit all over your car.

I don’t like them, but holy shit they have thrived in urban settings. They know how to scrounge up food/scraps.

If you are picking a fight with a mockingbird, that motherfucker will destroy you. They give zero fucks.

I'm hoping the squirrels, blue jays, and woodpeckers have my back.
Squirrels might have your back, but they are so small down there I don't know how much help they'll be.

Blue Jays are assholes too. Your best bet is to get them to fight the mockingbirds and just leave you out of it.

Lots of woodpeckers around here - but they are pretty skittish. I can never get close enough for a good pic. I see red bellied, downy and pileated woodpeckers pretty routinely. The pileated I see from time to time is a huge bird.

I won a bet with a friend so he bought me a Garmin Striker 4 sonar/GPS unit. This is great unit and is highly recommend it to any one with a boat of some sort. It’s the portable unit so has everything you need except a transducer mount for a belly boat so I made one myself. Bit of PVC and astrong engineering skill set and you’re out catching more fish than you can handle.

I was thinking of getting one of these for my kayak. I just don’t like the idea of installing a mount and complicating my set up too much. I might just buy a simple depth finder. I don’t really need to be told where the fish are, I can take a quick scan of a lake and know exactly where they are, but knowing depth would help.

Incels are natural enemies of mocking birds. They sound the alarm any time one is near.

The portable kit comes with options to mount right to a kayak just not float tubes. At this point you should be looking for anything possible to help you catch your first fish.

Pileated are a rare sight down here, at least in urban areas. I see downies but they don't get close, probably because of their size. Red-bellied are the most common. The ones I see aren't overly skittish. Maybe you're just an asshole.

After grackles, they're the most common bird around here. They can be loud but, being corvids, they're also super smart. I like them.

I've seen them take on mockingbirds, usually to a stalemate, but they usually just fly away. Mockingbirds are like that short friend you had in high school - confrontational and aggressive over the smallest shit. You accidentally bump into them and they're ripping their shirt off talking about how they're ready to die today. Who needs that shit?

Speaking of birds....our cat ate another white-winged dove this morning. That seems to be her favorite and there are billions around here (mourning doves too). I think they are dumb and slow enough for her to catch. When I left for work this morning there were scattered feathers on the porch and she was laying there like a lazy fuck with her belly all distended lol

Fucking cats. I'm not a cat person, but my wife took in this feral cat about 12 years ago. She is still feral - hates people, never comes in the house, etc. She just hangs around our yard for food and to kill shit. She is a tough fucker though, she was completely unfazed during the crazy winter storm we had in February.

BeardOfKnowledge @CMNHWishesHeWasVaccinated im thinking this cat probably doesn't have the appropriate stamps, and it's out of season anyways. Reported.

She definitely doesn't have appropriate stamps lol

She's a complete fucking asshole, we have to sedate her just to get her to the vet. And the sedation is a fucking chore, like wrestling a bear. I always get bloodied up. I'd say at least three times a week I hear her fighting with other cats. She's a tough scrappy one though, rarely ever the one to back down or get injured.

There was a study not long ago about how many birds a year domestic cats kill. In the US alone, it's around 2.5 Billion. Our little shithead definitely contributes to that.

Please don't let your cat outside. They kill billions of native animals every year in North America alone. In some instances they've driven them to extinction.

I'm a dog guy, never really cared much for cats. But, I have to admit she is kind of a badass. The times that I've got to witness her going after a possum or squirrel or whatever she wants to kill, it is kind of cool to see her strategy. Natural born hunters/killers.
