If it was all the way down to 50,000 that is new to me.Informed sources have put the figure closer to 50k. And the Taliban allegedly have 60-80k fighters.
So despite being outgunned (and even that is questionable due to purported ammunition shortages caused by corruption), the Taliban had 10-30k more men. That 20-60% advantage, paired with a stronger will to fight, meant the ADF never had a chance.
That's a hell of an attrition beyond what I knew.
The Taliban now owns the mythos. They have Islam and will tell the story of their glorious fight against the larger better funded force. That's a hell of a lot more attractive to future recruits than what's been served but the Afghan government for 20 years.
