Since everyone ITT will know more about hockey than me, this is the first in a series of questions. Some answers will be opinion as I'll try not to ask questions that can be googlyed.

What is it that makes a hit clean, and how does it differ from a dirty hit? I know a lot of infractions are subjective calls.

A dirty hit is generally any hit with attempt to injure or that could result in an injury.

Coming up high (or worse leaving his feet) on a hit so that your shoulder hits the guys head is a big one. Any hit to the head is considered dirty.

In general a dirty hit is excessive, or takes advantage of a player when he is vulnerable and not expecting to be hit.

A lot of dirty hits are late hits, a player has his guy lined up for a hit, his guy makes a pass and a the other player follows through with the hit anyway. You aren’t supposed to hit players without the puck, so as soon as the guy passes the puck off he is vulnerable and not expecting the impact.

Hits from behind are dirty especially when the player is up against the boards. When a player has his back to you and is digging for the puck you can’t hit him straight on because he’s so vulnerable, generally he has his head down looking for the puck and if he gets hit and goes head first into the boards he will get fucked up. You can however hit him from the side so he is not knocked towards the boards.

Another is a knee on knee hit. You see this a lot when a player has a guy lined up for a check and then realizes he’s going to miss, he sticks his leg out to try to get a piece of him. This results in a collision of knees, and is considered dirty because it can result in an injury.

Excellent and thoughtful answer. I knew specific things like intent to injure, knee on knee, like that. But they're taught to finish checks, and I'm supposing there are "dirty" dirty hits and borderliners that the players all have an understanding about. Unwritten rules between players.

Wish I could recall the game I bought it. The old players were my guys, Yzerman, Federov.

Somehow it became a tradition for me to name my external drives "Stu Grimson", for a couple of decades now
I'm going to take a picture of it when I get home that I think you'll appreciate.

My wifi router is "Steelers Suck". I named it that because the dude 2 houses up was a Steelers fan and I wanted him to see it everytime he searched for wifi. I have since moved, but I still have it named that just in case.

For the life of me, I cannot think of one reason why the rest of the teams are even bothering to go out there.

I suppose they do have to put their skates on ice to get paid, but it makes zero sense that any of the other teams are even labeled “professional” when compared to the lightning.

lightning may very well go undefeated this year

otaku1 @otaku1 I know your feelings are still hurt by the lightning punishing the canadiens, but you are being invited to join this league to maybe bring some sanity and self esteem back to your hockey life.
