Warmish days and cold nights can lead to some interesting finds on morning hikes.

Spotted this sapcicle from a fallen tree:

Or maybe I should call it a saplactite.

Isn't this what the Canadians eat?
This was an ash tree that fell victim to the emerald borer. Technically you can make syrup from any tree, so if I collected and boiled it down I guess I could have made some Ash Syrup. Although harvesting from a dead tree isn't going to give you much sap.

Maple trees are usually used for syrup because they have the highest sugar content and therefore provide the largest syrup yield. Generaly speaking, 40:1. 40 gallons of maple sap boiled down = 1 gallon of maple syrup.

I honestly think I might be world class at skipping rocks. I checked out a few youtube videos of competitions and I could at least compete. I'm going to look for a local competition this summer.
I can imagine the phone call:

You: Hi I'm interested in registering for the Greater Ontario Rock Skipping Competition.

Receptionist: Ok, sir, and what are your qualifications?

You: I wrestled in high school.

Receptionist: **hangs up**

I might not beat him, but I’m in the same ballpark. This is exciting!

If you’re a trout in the PNW area you’ve just been put on notice.
