The way it works in America is that you borrow whatever amount the school says is tuition and you have to pay it all back. If you go broke and declare bankruptcy and like lose your house and like wipe all your debt clean and shit. Well, you still have to pay back anything owed on student loans or to the IRS. Because fuck yo.... I mean, because the government cares.
Well, part of this is true here too. We are just America junior. Tuition is still outrageous.

There is just a safety net that if you are currently a dirty poor, you don't pay. But you are still a debt slave.

Good on people for trying to better themselves and good for America for encouraging that behaviour.

Is seeking out more skills and opportunities something that should encouraged?
seeking out skills and opportunities that society values.

or go to foreign countries and kill brown people, then the fedgov will pick up your school tab. I also worked 13hr night shifts for 4 years while I double-majored in EE and Physics.

my employer paid my tuition and books.

We have a traditional payback. But also if you are taking official school loans for an accredited school then there is an income based loan repayment option that goes down when your income goes down. The good news is you only have to pay on the loan for 20 to 25 years and anything else after that will be forgiven!

Like you said, just spend the next couple of decades in poverty and you don't have to worry about those pesky loans.

Loans require an ROI to justify.

Most of these kids are taking out a loan on "the college experience".

Same way people take $50k loans for a wedding.

Dumb should hurt.

What would have been nicer is if they erased the interest on all student loans on top of a 10k principal forgiveness and a cap of 1% interest on loans for the next 10 years, but unfortunately that would probably require an act of Congress.

Also LOL at the haters talking about mortgage forgiveness. Homeowners get tax credits, rebates and equity opportunities literally all the time. There's been very little policy to offset educational debt in our lifetime. Those loans are also directly between people and banks unlike educational debt which is overwhelmingly held by the federal government. I suppose if one wanted more aggressive federal involvement in minimizing their home loans, the federal government would have to nationalize all housing, in which case, welcome to the revolution comrades!

What an insanely retarded statement that would be impossible to prove.

dumbfuck. It's literally how colleges market themselves to HS seniors.

Tell me you didn’t have to take out student loans without telling me you didn’t have to take out student loans.

Your dad is a doctor, yeah?
I worked and paid for my own way.
Have since I was 18, just like my dad did.
He insisted.

So yes, no student loans for me.

What did you take in school?

When did you move out of dad’s home?

Do you think the supports your parents were able to offer through their high income employment contributted to you being able to work for that schooling?

I had a good construction job at 18, moved out at 18.

My parents both put themselves thru school by working and insisted I do the same.

Only loans I have taken out are for houses and a truck.

Only responded to your post because my TMMAC pooping device isn't logged in, so you aren't on ignore when I read and poop.

G'day mate.

So you paid your rent, all your own bills and managed to pay for tuition without having to take out any student loans at the age of 18?

Something doesn’t add up here.

You didn’t say what you took in school? I assume it was night school if you were working a full time construction job… that must have taken many years to complete.

To be able to work full time while attending school is always impressive.

Student loan should have always been at inflation or less.

I have 6.8% interest rate on student loans and a 7.9% interest rate on a credit card ? none of that makes any sense.

But even above all of this why aren't we subsidizing schools instead of students? Wouldn't that make more schools?

When I subsidize the customer instead of the product don't I just make more dollars chasing the same product and make the cost go up?

if you want less of something, subsidize it.

School and rent totaled up to about 1300 per month for in state residents.
I made 2000 per month doing emmanuel labor.
Late 90s, early 2000s.

I passed class, got some ass, and moved on.

I still essentially work construction and have my own small construction operation.

2000 wouldn't cut it here nowadays, probably would only cover rent and expenses.
Studio apts are 1000 here now. Tuition is thru the roof and cost of living is insanity.

This isn't about me, this is about biden and 10K debt forgiveness...and I want mine, and I hope you get yours.

And yes, I never took out a student loan.

Longtime Student Debt is some sad shit...I know 40 year old guys making 50-60k per year and still holding 50-60K debt, just paying the minimum or some shit...I don't really know how it all works, personally I throw lots of money at the principal on any loan I have because I don't like owing.

Does anyone here still have a bunch of Student debt?

I left school with 33,000 in student debt… because I was young n dumb about 10k of that went to partying and booze while in school.

Parents paid for my first year tuition.

Worked 30 hour per week while in school.

Took ten years after school to pay off my student loan debt. Worked full time in one job then worked weekends in group homes for about 5 years after school to get that debt down.

Was a beautiful sight to see that letter in the mail stating I had paid off that debt.
