Tasers make more sense
Go to YT sometime, you can watch videos of people being voluntarily tased, and they drop like rocks.
You can also watch a hundred videos of worked up guys go through landed tasers like nothing.
It's actually a bit frightening how often violent resisters seem totally unaffected by them.

i get that they arent perfect. all im saying is that i dont want anyone to have a gun on the plane

people with guns typically think about themselves

lets say a pilot walks out of the cockpit and shoots someone up front trying to get to the controls. what happens when the bullet hits the person? does the bullet disappear? or does it go through the person?

bc there are a shitload of people sitting right behind that person in the line of fire

Cities vs states? Seems a strange way to compare.
Why compare states and not cities? Most violent crime happens in cities, so by using state data you're washing out the effect of "gun control" with other social factors, like wealth disparity and immigrant density, both of which are much more closely correlated to rates of violent crime than "firearm access".

And CA is still Top 15 for Violent Crime rates, according your source...hardly a glowing example of the efficacy of restricting access to firearms. In fact, CA is home to 3 of the Top 20 deadliest mass shooting events in US history (San Ysidro, Thousand Oaks, San Bernardino).

Doesn't really seem like restricting access to firearms is going to have the effect you're anticipating.

A pressurized cabin where the back opens up?

Earlier, I was eluding to the dangers of a bullet hitting a window in a pressurized cabin
a bullet hole is just going to start the depressurization of the cabin....I don't think you can't put enough bullet holes in the fuselage to bring the plane down from cabin pressure.

Top 15 for violent crime yet bottom 15 for gun homicides by mass shootings… what does that tell you?

Sure it’s home to some brutal mass shootings yet it is still low per capita compared to the rest of Americas a… and here I though you were a stats guy.

if a window has a hole in it, the window isnt going to shatter?

and if the window shatters, it isnt going to depressurize the cabin?

Stopping toxic flow of guns from U.S. to Mexico
Mexican officials have said that a significant part of the epidemic of violence and crime that has plagued their nation in recent decades is driven by the illicit traffic of weapons from the U.S. Mexico has restrictive firearms laws, with one gun store in the entire nation and only about 50 permits issued per year. Between 70 to 90 percent of guns recovered at crime scenes in Mexico can be traced back to the U.S. Drug cartels, in particular, buy those weapons in the U.S., mostly in Texas or Arizona, and smuggle them across the border.

I don't think you realize that it's the BATFE that's flowing guns in to Mexico.

But again, this is a clear demonstration of how effective a proposed ban would be on keeping people who want a weapon for criminal purposes from attaining one.

And how Law Enforcement is compromised in enforcing any such ban. Mexico has all laws to control firearm access, but is awash in criminal weapons. The good people of Mexico have been made more powerless and vulnerable by these laws.

improve access to mental healthcare. bring back police accountability.

those are things we can do that will actually impact the rates of all violent crime, not simply change the aesthetic of mass murder.

Claims people are cherry picking data points.

… pulls out the Chicago card.

Impressive.
The point is that there's no correlation between "firearm access laws" and violent crime, for a lot of reasons.
If such a correlation existed, it would be widely known by now. You didn't rewrite violent crime statistics when you cherry-picked one state (which is still Top 15 for Violent Crime) as an example.

Other factors are far more relevant.

"i'm going to take the most populous and wealthiest state and show per capita statistics, while completely disregarding the role of wealth and population density"

see what happened there? And let's acknowledge that you're specifically counting "gun homicides"...Homicides were up 30% in 2020, and another 17% in 2021...aggravated assaults were up > 7%...do you think the victims of homicide care if they're killed by a firearm or a hammer?

If CA gun control laws worked to stop mass shootings, there wouldn't be 3 of the Top 20 mass shootings in that state.

the windows on planes are two layers and plastic, they wouldn't shatter like you're picturing.

and the pressure delta between the inside and outside of the plane, even at 40k feet, isn't going to be strong enough to move the beverage cart.

If the cabin depressurizes, the pilot turns on the seatbelt sign and lowers altitude. That's it. The oxygen mask is for the panic. :)

Unless something structural fails and rips a large section out, then you'll have enough wind to blow someone out (without a seat belt).

but you can put dozens of little holes in a plane and the only thing that has to happen is decrease altitude

this is so dumb.

You want to attack people who are proposing a real solution because of Identity Politics?

you don't support improved access to mental health care?
I'm enjoying the new talking point. Ie, Filthy @Filthy proposes expanding mental health care. So gun confiscation enthusiast says "The GOP took away mental health funding!!!" as if that makes your initial statement less true.

Calm your tits snowflake.
explain to me how what I think you did isn't exactly what you did.

an ad hominem attack on a solution because of who is proposing it.
a solution that's a cornerstone of your view of social justice, if I'm not mistaken.

This is the answer you are looking for.

Not sure why the current defence is mental illness. Lol only joking. I know exactly why the current defence de jour is mental illness.

don't get me wrong, CA has amazing funding of access to mental health care, and still not very good at getting it to the people who need it...Homelessness and Violent Crime are kind of synonymous with CA metro areas.

But I think that we should start on common ground and begin to aggregate incremental improvements. Big Bold Bans play well in media, and give people the virtuous warm fuzzy of righteous indignation at The Others, but it doesn't actually work out because of things like Iron Law of Prohibitions. And the whole notion of paternalistic gov't is antithetical to being American (IMAO).

but i think that if we start with agreeing that access to mental health is a social concern, for reasons of Violence to Homelessness, then we can talk about how to deliver it. If we can agree that Police Accountability is being abused through Qualified Immunity and Civil Asset Forfeiture, then we can figure out how to protect the good cops while replacing the bad cops with new good cops.

Small changes, keep moving in those directions. That's how democracy works when it gets things done, but that doesn't sell tickets to cable news.

because you have to be mentally ill to kill dozens of children or stand outside the door while children are murdered?

seems that mentally defective cops and mentally defective killers add up to horrible scenes like this or Parkland...
