No, they wanted to stop the process of the election being certified. They wanted to kill Pence. LolThe case being made is that the mob was there to stop Pence from confirming the count and thus stopping Biden from becoming president.
That's also why in the days before January 6th the media was running stories, like the one I linked, explaining how stupid of an idea it was that the transfer was going to be stopped by Pence.
Trump had tried numerous things but that wasn’t the only thing he had cooking to stop the Congressional Count (which is required). Multiple republicans had filed a law suit on Dec 27 with the US district court to give Pence the authority to reject electoral votes without recourse from congress. It was denied. Then they appealed it to the circuit court. It was denied on Jan 2. Then they filed a motion to the Supreme Court to stay (stop) Pence from declaring the President (which happens at the end of the session) until the judgement from their case could be reviewed. It was still on their desk on Jan 7th. The judge waited, Pence declared the winner and then the judge denied the motion as being moot.
Also, republicans objected to about 5 states’ electoral votes (tried to get them thrown out). They only got to vote on two, Pennsylvania and Arizona. They didn’t succeed and those two states wouldn’t have swayed the result. However, if they had voted and won Pennsylvania and Ohio, it could have kept Biden out of office because he wouldn’t have had the required 270 electoral votes.
So they were trying everything.
