On January 5th, 2021 the same outlets currently reporting that democracy almost fell were running articles explaining how the vice president can't decide whether or not an election outcome is legitimate.

Congress convened on Wednesday afternoon to review the Electoral College results that delivered Biden the presidency. Pence’s role in the proceedings is mostly ceremonial, and he will be there to recognize the votes and any objections.

Republican lawmakers in both chambers are expected to object to the certification of results in at least three states. The objections will trigger a round of debate on each state, but they will not change the result.

Majorities of both chambers would have to vote to reject the electors from a given state, and Democrats control the House and several GOP senators have said they will not object.

As a result, Trump and his allies have turned their focus to Pence, inaccurately insisting that the vice president has unilateral authority under the Electoral Count Act to reject electors or somehow declare Trump the winner.

first, I'm not convinced that the draft opinion is going to be the majority opinion. We'll know soon.
IMAO-
All natural rights are equal. The right to privacy and the right to do with your body as you please are both fundamental human rights. I think there are better ways to federalize the right to privacy than Roe v Wade, but hopefully this forces Congress to negotiate a legislative solution.

What ceremony? Lol. There was no ceremony. Pence was using that as a figure of speech because he has no power in the process.

The Electoral Count Act governs the process of electoral votes being submitted to Congress, Congress counting and certifying those votes, and declaring the winning president. Congress holds a joint session to count and certify the electoral votes. This session starts on Jan 6 at 1 pm. The Vice President sits at the helm to hear objections and direct protocols but can’t participate in the objections or voting on objections. He can reject some objections though. But he can’t say votes don’t count. That’s why he said his role was ceremonial. If this process is not complete then Biden can not take office. Trump and Pence are still out on Jan 20 but Pelosi would have been President until Congress certified the votes and declared a President.
The Electoral Count Act outlines rules and regulations that make it almost impossible for Congress not to declare a winner before Jan 20 though.

They were in session when the riots started and had to stop the process, just like the Kavanaugh hearings. They had to come back and reconvene later, just like the Kavanaugh hearings. Except one interrupted the appointment of a judge and the other interrupted the declaration of the new President of the United States.

I do agree one was more meaningful though. I will give you that.
