This is one of those times preference and principles are at odds.
I don’t personally dislike JLP by any means, but I do believe he represented some of the worst qualities about this forum. He provided some good topics for discussion and I appreciate how active he was, however, he was nothing but toxic to people he didn’t agree with. He labeled them, attacked them, and spewed vitriol whenever someone had different opinions on political or social issues. Having a different perspective than him based on your own experiences, preferences, or sources was a catalyst for name calling and ten paragraph rants. If you didn’t think every conservative was evil incarnate, you were part of the problem. Baseless Tweets from far left outlets/personalities were fine, but ones from far right outlets/personalities were all broad-brushed as disinformation, and if you didn’t provide multiple peer-reviewed sources he approved of, he couldn’t acknowledge them. Don’t get him started on Libertarians like me without expecting a meltdown that would make a even toddler seem reasonable. Even trying to debate was futile because unless you operated in the arbitrary confines/rules he created for any interaction, he would immediately be set off and the conversation devolved into mud slinging.
All that said, if this is a perma-ban it has to be the weakest one ever. Worse things are said/done here every day. If this were directed at another member or even reported by someone else, it would not have resulted in a ban. A pink is deserving, but this feels like an emotional reaction, not a consistent application of the rules. Unless I missed something more egregious, JLP should still be a forum member. If he is going to get the boot, there should be an inarguable reason or a clear ultimatum/final warning, IMO.

Wild and Splinty have long-proved that they don't ban people from their forum for posting points of view they disagree with, and don't deserve that characterization.
The Beard thing is the outlier, but at the same time I think it's not - because there have been in the past certain insults that have been considered particularly heinous for involving children and that sort of thing, and Leigh putting his foot down about setting a baseline of morality in discussion even when it's not referencing the child of a poster here, but any child, I think is ok. I can't say whether I would have handled it the same, but he said he discussed it with others first, and that's more than a lot of other people would have done.
I also disagree with people who are asking for consistency from mods and admins. This place is free, and people are working on it in their spare time - there would be consistency in an ideal world, but that's not where we are. If you're indecent and getting away with it, and then get mad that you suddenly didn't get away with it, well you still made a choice to be indecent to begin with, and consequences are ok. Complaining about consistency in enforcement sounds like being pissed that you can't figure out how to game the system since you never know when you'll take a hit.
Still feel this way, this one is in the books.

I think me and the elf should handle bannings. Idgaf about politics so I'm impartial. Just banning people and pinking people, no admin duties. Pure regulation.
