Edgar doesn't exactly blame McGregor for targeting the lightweight title fight just after knocking out Jose Aldo in December. But that doesn't diminish his disappointment that he's no longer receiving the next shot at the Irish champion.

"I kind of had an idea it was going to happen before it was announced," Edgar told FOX Sports after the UFC 197 main event was confirmed. "I think Conor played the smart move, he played the business move. You can't blame him for that, it just sucks that it's at my expense and now I'm in limbo since I was supposed to get that next title shot. If he stuck around and lost to me, he has no option to go up to 155. I think now he goes up, win or lose, he's still got the belt and he can come back down to 145. He played the safe play which is smart by him.

"You don't see usually where the guys have that much say. Usually when you're the champion, you fight the No. 1 contender, you don't get to pick and choose. But he seems to be able to do that."

What if Edgar faces McGregor for the featherweight title and wins and then gives McGregor an automatic rematch with the lightweight title going up for grabs?

There are a lot of moving parts to even make that happen, but Edgar is open to the scenario and he'd be more than happy to take two titles off of McGregor in the end.

"I'd love to. We can do it back-to-back and that will be UFC 204 or whatever, that would be the next biggest fight," Edgar said. "I'm game. If they let me get my hands on him once, I'll definitely re-do it."

FE trolling hard today
Frankie just reeks of desperation at this point
Are you guys serious? This guy has earned his shot more than anyone in the UFC. His losses are too who? Benson and Aldo. He comes to fight every time whether you like his style or not he gets it done. Frankie would eat Conor up. He is fast, keeps moving which would drive Conor nuts because he likes fighters who stand right in front of him, and his takedowns would give Conor fits. Dos Anjos will Grind Conor down with takedowns as well. He wont let emotions get to him like Aldo did because he saw what happens when it does.

He's earned his shot I agree but he won't beat Conor once, much less twice.

Again we all know styles make fights we have literally seen it time and time again, and Frankies style is a nightmare for Conor. We saw what Mendes did to Conor with a short camp. If Chad was smart he wouldve literally stayed on top and just kept doing what he was doing, but he went for the sub. No usually that isnt a bad thing, but if you have trained BJJ you know when you are dead tired (which mendes was) going for a sub, you better damn well be sure you got it or youre done.

Mendes was going to wrestle Conor to death.

Aldo was gonna leg kick Conor to death.

Now the guy that got KO'd cold by Jeremy Stephens is gonna beat Conor?

Come on man.

He was tired from the front kicks to the gut.

With a full camp it would've ended the same way but in the third or fourth instead of the second.

Mendes couldve wrestled him to death in fact he was, he made a mistake. Aldo also made a mistake but that mistake was Conors doing by getting in his head.

I def do not agree, but thats why we discuss lol

People forget that Conor defended almost half of Chad's TD's. Both guys are NCAA div 1.

Frankie throws combos like he planned every one of them out before the fight. His striking is kind of mechanical. Conor would likely tag him and he wouldn't fail to put him away like Maynard.

I see this fight as more of a toss up, tbh. Either fighter could win but I don't think Edgar has a good chance of finishing, whereas Conor, imho, does.

His striking imo is crisp and literally looks better every fight. He mixes striking and TDs perfectly. Whether or not Conor defended most of Chads TDs, chad still put him on his ass and kept him there and rained down elbows. Frankie is much better on the ground and much more patient.

Idk, I think his striking looks robotic. That combo he landed to KO Mendes, dumb as it sounds to criticize strikes that finished a fight, looked unbelievably rigid.

Idk if we're allowed to post gifs here. I apologize and will delete, if so.

And Conor is a smart guy. I'm sure the Mendes fight was a lesson. But it's important to also remember that he was preparing for a striker the entire time. He got an NCAA div 1 wrestler at the last minute.

Agree to disagree, i thought those strikes looks clean, crisp and on point.'

Also look how good frankie is, he is smart and keeps his right hand up by his face when he throws the left and not many MMA fighters do that, which we have seen and they get KOd, hence Aldo. If Aldos hand was up as he was throwing his other hand he wouldnt have been dropped face first.

His body looks like it's swiveling like a rockemsockem robot and his fist stops 3 inches after Mendes' face, like he's shadowboxing.

I still think Frankie is a great fighter I just think his striking is way below Conor's.

Well that i agree with. Conors striking is def nasty, BUT he does keep his hands down a lot.

True, he definitely is one of the more hittable FW's at the top of the heap right now. But he has the chin to back it up.

Hopefully, he doesn't make a career out of that.

True that and yeah i agree. Dont get me wrong, although i am not a fan of the talk, i am def a fan of Conor the fighter. I just think Frankie could have his number and i def think RDA will make it a long night for Conor.

If Conor really does dust RDA in under a minute, then no way he's cutting all that weight and going back down to 145. Why would he? Conor vs Nate Diaz would be the fight to make at that point, and because it's Conor then maybe even Lawler after that? Frankie is long overdue for his shot at the 145 belt, so what's the fight to make for the vacant belt? Edgar vs Holloway? Edgar vs Aldo? If Frankie becomes the new featherweight champ, my guess is that he defends it once, then drops down to 135 because a third belt puts an exclamation on his legacy as one of the all time greats. If Conor loses to RDA, then he probably cuts down for one more fight against Frankie, and we'll see what the consensus is at that point given the change in circumstances.

Edgar landed that shot on Chad because Mendes has T-rex arms.

He would never get close enough to McGoat to land that shit.
