I get the personal responsibility angle you're trying to play, but doesn't sound like Dada's family were blaming anyone for anything except stupid comments that are borderline racist.

Besides, personal responsibility works both ways. If Brogan gets the same kind of backlash he got about they Cyborg comments, he has no one to blame but himself.
I just don't see the issue with the comments, I really don't. He's a fat out of shape dude. What fat out of shape dude doesn't like those things? Now if he said grape drank instead of orange soda I'd understand the outrage. Dada is a grown man who went out there and made a fool of himself on national TV. What did they expect to happen?

Cheeseburgers are enjoyed by all Americans regardless of race.

Fried chicken is stereotypically linked to the black community but is probably eaten by crackers just as much.

Orange soda, grape soda, and fruit punch soda Fanta would not exist if not for the black community.

I don't think JR's comments were racist as far as intent goes, but he probably should have been more careful with his words.
I agree. Had he said "cheeseburgers, French fries, and orange soda" or "cheeseburgers, fried chicken, and soft drinks" there would've been nothing to point at as racist.

However, he chose to list two things that are stereotyped as "black people food", so it comes off as kind of racist. I'm not sure about "overtly" racist, but I'm not black so I'm not as sensitive to that comment as DaDa's family. However, Rogan definitely could've worded that better though, 100%.

Look, I'm no social justice warrior, but it sounds like Rogan was going towards grape soda & watermelon & stopped just short after the fried chicken comment. Not cool.

As for friend chicken, there's history there:

Making Fried Chicken and Watermelon Racist

The problem stems from the way fried chicken is associated with black people, and the historical baggage that comes with it. The same way blackface recalls minstrel shows, the "black people love fried chicken" image recalls negative portrayals of black people. According to Claire Schmidt at the University of Missouri, it started with Birth of a Nation, the 1915 film on the founding of Ku Klux Klan. In one scene:

[A] group of actors portraying shiftless black elected officials acting rowdy and crudely in a legislative hall. (The message to the audience: These are the dangers of letting blacks vote.) Some of the legislators are shown drinking. Others had their feet kicked up on their desks. And one of them was very ostentatiously eating fried chicken.

"That image really solidified the way white people thought of black people and fried chicken," Schmidt said.

And in case you're tempted to think that sort of portrayal is a thing of the past, like minstrel shows, think back to what professional golfer Sergio Garcia said to his nemesis, Tiger Woods, when asked if he'd ever invite Woods to dinner. "We'll have him 'round every night," Garcia said. "We will serve fried chicken." Woods was not amused. When Republican Colorado State Sen. Vicki Marble associated diabetes and mortality rates with barbecue and chicken, even the Colorado GOP had to take a step back.

And no one's outraged. I expect stupid, ignorant comments from Brogan. I think most of us do.

It's just lame to say that, especially when the dude is in hospital. And obtuse on his end to say that kind of thing & pretend there's no racist history behind the fried chicken thing. Saying orange soda instead of grape was his way of slamming on the breaks right before he crossed the line. Now, people get to debate whether it was racist or not, when he was clearly heading in that direction.

We will agree to disagree I guess. It's a silly thing to get mad about. Did his family say that he does not in fact enjoy those things? I know I do.

I hear you, but no one's 'mad' outside of Dada's family, & they should be. They're right: there are racial overtones, which I explained clearly in my previous post. There was intent on Rogan's part to push racism as far as he could & back off at the last minute. It's just a lame, obvious attempt at being edgy & keeping it real.

I don't recall his family saying anything about eating fried chicken. I could be wrong.

Either way, his comments are making the rounds in Yahoo news:

Joe Rogan: Dada 5000's heart filled with 'fried chicken and orange soda'

Like I said, personal responsibility works both ways. If this comes back to bite Rogan in the ass, well, he brought it upon himself. It's not the first time. He's a fucktard if he didn't learn from the Cyborg incident. He can say what he wants, but there are consequences for saying stupid shit in the public stoplight.

This is a pretty balanced viewpoint, one i share, and one you articulated so much better than I.

Dada's in the hospital right now. He paid the price for being overweight & out of shape. He got his comeuppance.

Time will tell if Rogan's mouth got him in trouble (again).

I think they're just upset about their family member being in the hospital right now, and jokes towards his situation are somewhat insensitive.

As for food items being mentioned being racist? That is in the eye of the beholder. If you think race, you see race in everything.

Stereotypical nuances are expressed about each and every ethincity or cultural group regardless of race. It's a difference between cultures that is often joked about and made fun of. That goes both ways.

Jokes are crude sometimes, and we can decide whether they are funny or not and move on. But with Dada still in the hospital, we can argue that these jokes could at least wait till we know the big fella is going to be better.

Sorry, but there IS history behind fried chicken comment. I posted it before. Here is more about the fried chicken stereotype:

Where Did That Fried Chicken Stereotype Come From?

Here is the clip from Birth of a Nation, the KKK film the started the fried chicken thing:

You really think Brogan would've brought up fried chicken & flavored soda if Dada wasn't black? If you don't see the racial overtones, then you're in denial, obtuse, or ignorant about this country's history with race relations. I would also say you're also incapable of seeing things from someone else's perspective. Just cause it doesn't bother you doesn't mean it's not disrespectful towards someone else.

Regardless of what anyone thinks, it was a not-so-veiled attempt at a racial stereotype. You may not like it. You may not know the history of where these things come from. Either way, it's there & it's not just in the 'eye of the beholder'. There's history & intent. No one would've thought anything is he said cheeseburgers, Twinkies, & soda.

It's the same reason why Bill Romanowski got shit for his boy tweet about Cam Newton. If he called him a baby, that's one thing. But boy has a history of racism behind it.

There was obvious intent to be edgy, which is why he stopped short of grape soda, which even La Paix @BirdWatcher admits would've been crossing the line.

I get this desire to move past all this. I get how uncomfortable people get talking about race, & how defensive whites in particular get (this is coming from someone who's 1/2 white, for whatever it's worth). But that's easy to say when you're not the one being stereotyped.

I've posted multiple links about the fried chicken thing. If you don't wanna acknowledge the racial overtones, then fine. But don't make some lame, passive-aggressive comment about seeing race in everything just cause you're ignorant about the historical context of what was said.

That's pretty much all I have to say about it. For now, at least.

Joe Rogan is racist against fat people. If DAda was a fat white guy, same exact statement could be applied.

so what if a black comedian said the same thing in a same context like middle of a fight companion, drunk out of their asses, talking about how pathetic it was to watch some fat guy gassed and out of shape in a pro fight on TV front of 2million people? would Dada's family still claim Racism? just wondering.

I hold the opinion that the comments are making fun of a cultural stereotype. He could be joking about wooden shoes if he'd joked about me, or maple syrup when referring to Canadians, point out alcoholism when referring to the Irish, or even better yet the Native Americans... that would all of the sudden be racist right?

The point is, these are little stabs at other people's cultures, regardless of race. And I am glad that a guy like Rogan is including the African-American culture in his reportoire -and not treating it with silk gloves. We are all the same, equal. If you pause to joke about a certain group, because of their race or background, you are just as much the racist, as the stereotypical bigots we know of.

This line of thinking doesn't make me ignorant, or passive aggressive. But as Americans make fun of my cultural habits and background I realize it's cultural. If I was a black Dutch guy, instead of a white one, would it all of the sudden be racist? No, of course not. African-American culture is both celebrated and made fun of just like any other culture andit should.

I get the racial tension here in the states, I get that we need to pick sides, but I just won't. I make fun of all my friends just the same, no matter what color they are. The thing is, that is how it should be, and that respect comes right back at me.

I am well aware of the injustice that affects many racial and cultural groups here in America, and we should be aware and acknowledge those injustices. And we can move on from that by adopting the right mentality. For instance, me and my buddy were talking crap to each other, like many friends do. And he's owning me left and right, then I say "listen up shorty..." (He's in a wheel chair) and he started laughing. You'd think the guy would be outraged but instead he thought it was hilarous. Because he's treated like a human being. Racism and bigotry sometimes manifest out of good intentions as well, hence my attitude.

Getting rid of racism is like getting rid of polution, it starts by yourself. We all do it, we all know better, we all want to tell others to stop it. But the best thing is to start with oneself and reject the old habits of our predecessors.

We can always decide that Rogan's comments were misplaced or simply just not funny.

Thanks for this civil discussion and reply for an otherwise such a charged subject, this is where it starts.

Why would Dada's family say anything about about a some pathetic fat guy?

If that fat guy was their family member in the hospital, & this imaginary black comedian with a history of saying stupid shit said something with racial overtones, I would guess so, but who knows? I live in the real world. That didn't happen.

Agreed. I'm guessing he does in fact love chicken. Chicken, especially fried, is delicious. Dada is a big dude, I'm sure he loves all types of food. Is Rogan (or other white dudes) never allowed to say a black dude enjoys chicken? Seems like there are much bigger things to be bothered by than someone saying a dude that likely loves chicken was probably eating chicken.

It sucks that Dada is in the hospital. He seems like a nice enough dude. I hope he gets well soon and goes on to do great things. I feel bad for his loved ones who are worried about him and I understand they are sensitive, but they should focus on him and how they can help him recover instead of worrying about a comic saying he eats chicken.

Before I continue, I appreciate the civil discussion as well. I apologize if I crossed any lines by calling you passive aggressive, but your comment about seeing race in everything felt like it was directed at me & FELT passive aggressive. I felt the need to address it.

The reason why anyone would see race in friend chicken & flavored soda is cause there are racial overtones.

That being said, I feel like you're moving the goalpost here. On the one hand, it sounded like you tried to minimize anyone who acknowledges the historical context of what Rogan said as being in the eye of the beholder. It goes deeper than that. There's history there, which I explained numerous times.

Now it sounds like you're acknowledging the racial overtones. He didn't just call Dada an out of shape fat slob, he went racial with it. It sounds you're trying to justify it cause you like to make fun of all your friends.

There is a huge difference between you & your friends or me & my friends breaking each other's balls in private. I had a friend who made some comment about me being a (1/2) Peruvian pygmy who got raped by Cortez. I told him my great grandfather owned his great grandfather. Would we say shit like that in public? No.

It's not as simple as how you feel or what you want. There is an entire demographic of people involved here. They probably don't feel the same as you do. Dada's family don't. They're the ones that have to deal with it.

My point is this: African Americans, & Dada's family, have a right to call Rogan on his comments, regardless of anyone else feels about it. There is no denying the racial overtones. If he incites the wrath of blacks & social justice warriors, he deserves it.

Making fun of a cultural stereotype is one thing. Louis CK does it all the time. But Rogan's timing & intent is just shitty. He couldn't leave well enough alone with the fat slob comment. He brought race into it. And like you said, the guy's still in the hospital. His family's still dealing with it. His timing was shitty, & on some level, he knew he was about to cross the line, which is why he probably stopped at orange soda.

If Rogan has to make another 1/2 hearted apology, or gets suspended, or has someone like Rampage pissed off at him, good - fuck 'em. He's a meatheaded douche & asked for it. I'll just sit back & have a laugh.

Yeah, Dada is fat, out of shape, & should've never taken that fight in his condition. Kimbo sucks too, & I hope Justin Wren KO's him to Bolivian. Personally, I think it's lame to bring anything with racial overtones into the discussion with the guy in hospital. It wasn't really that funny, & just another time Rogan tried to hard to be edgy.
