The issue is illegal immigration over the Mexican border. Not just Mexicans. The Wikipedia article on illegal immigration sources that at least 77% of all illegal immigration in the United States comes from Mexico or countries in Central and South America. 62% of all illegal immigration comes from Mexico.
I'm not sure how you say 2/3 - 3/4 of all illegal immigration is not that much? That is in spite of significant attempts at not having any.
The same Wikipedia article does not register Canada as even 1%, which is the minimum threshold even to show up in the list. There are more illegal Chinese here than a illegal Canadians.

I wasnt aware that central americans are using Mexico as an entry point, I had heard Syrians were trying to come via the Mexican border during the height of the ISIS media campaign (ISIS is a problem but the media has lost interest for now) which I found funny.

I think the intellects on both side understand that the narrative will not progress this election cycle. It's either have fun pointing out fallacies or ignore it. Those are really the only two options.
Seems like our election process. Basically a sudden death game show not unlike survivor where at the beginning its dog eat dog and as the numbers dwindle they start pretending to like each other to ensure self preservation (there's enough room for everyone now) then let the backstabbing begin.
