i have a Rem 870 marine mag and a Beretta 9000S by the bed. If something goes bump in the night, I take the pistol and a flashlight on my WTF patrol. If the front door comes down, my wife is grabbing the shotgun and the baby and heading for the tub. I'm grabbing the pistol and heading to my other daughter's room.
I have several handguns but i prefer a shorter barrel shotgun with pistol grip for home defense. Hunting shotguns require too much of a swing and have to be shouldered which makes them awful for going around corners.
For the woman i prefer her to go to the bathroom and put my benelli against the wall pointed at the door. Her ears will get blown out but better than the alternative.
Pull the plug and you should be able to load a few more shells. Most hunting shotguns can hold up to 5 shells but the law restricts you to 3 when hunting.

They had several different versions of the same shotgun at the store (its a maverick 88), i got the "security" version, only difference that I can tell is that it has a shorter barrel (18 inch) than the other versions.
yeah it had a wooden dowel in it that the instruction manual had me pull. It will hold 5 plus one in the chamber but I dont want to keep anything in the chamber since I plan to keep it loaded.

Aside from convenience of storage I can't think of a single instance a pistol is superior to a shotgun or a centerfire rifle for the purpose of home defense.
Or - and this is just a thought - live in the real world and accept things for the way they are instead of the way you want them to be.

yeah - lots of room for different opinions on the subject, talked about it a lot over the years. Really, it depends on whether you're in an offensive or defensive position, and if you have access to an SBR. Personally, I think a pistol-caliber carbine is *The Best for balancing scenarios. Short of that, a handgun has the distinction of being able to be on you at all times. Even sitting in the LazE Boy watching Brazilian fart porn.
Look at it this way - a handgun is a machine purpose-built for killing humans at < 20'. That pretty much covers most of the scenarios of home defense, assuming the BG isn't wearing body armor. Other firearms are adapted to that purpose, but the handgun was built for it.
A shouldered short barreled shotgun only protrudes about a few inches or less passed the end of your lead hand; about the same as a pistol. It also wields a ton more stopping power. In a home defense scenario I also have no intention of patrolling around my house. My advantage is that I'm familiar with the layout of my home, and that I have the police coming over to back me up. My disadvantage is that I don't know the mental state, or how the intruder might be armed. I don't want to confront him/her unless I'm forced to. Take my shit, it can be replaced. Lives can't, and you don't want to go down the stairs to find 4 armed guys waiting for you. In a home defense scenario my job is to keep my family safe, and wait for the cavalry to arrive.

Also, a handgun is easier to retain while using the second hand for lighting or shielding.

@JohnyHendricksBeard I understand your point about a short-barrel or bullpup, I just don't like something spraying bullets inside a residential environment.
Plus the obvious accuracy vs, handgun, and definitely intimidation factor. That pumping sound is the worst scenario outcome for would be burglar.

Totally true- I've told my wife if someone is trying to get in to go for the shotgun, tell them you have it and rack it. The sound of a shotgun racking is INSTANTLY recognizable and a strong deterrent.
