Trilogy fight with Conor McGregor? Nate Diaz is going to need an 8-figure payday

UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor just scored a massive payday with his first pro boxing bout. Now his potential next MMA opponent is looking for one of his own.

Nate Diaz (19-11 MMA,14-9 UFC), who’s 1-1 after two recent welterweight bouts with McGregor (21-3 MMA, 9-1 UFC), is up for a fight with “Notorious,” who recently fought boxing legend Floyd Mayweather (50-0 boxing) and suffered a 10th-round TKO loss in an Aug. 26 pay-per-view blockbuster.

Diaz’s boxing coach, Richard Perez, told Submission Radio a Diaz-McGregor trilogy fight is possible – for the right price.

What would it take?

“At least $20 million, $30 million,” he told Submission Radio. “Come on. UFC’s making a whole lot of money – a whole lot of money – and they’re pocketing it. They’re giving more to McGregor, so it’s not fair because it takes two in that ring to draw a crowd. I mean, a good two fighters.

“It’s just like Mayweather when he fought (Andre) Berto. It was not even sold out at all. It was embarrassing. It’s because that guy couldn’t draw a crowd. See, that’s what I’m saying: It’s the fighters that draw the crowd. And Nathan and McGregor – the third one would be outstanding. Everyone knows that. So he needs to get paid at least $30 million easy.”

McGregor, who’s No. 1 in the USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie MMA lightweight rankings (and No. 3 pound-for-pound), suffered a short-notice submission loss to Diaz at UFC 196 in March 2016. Later that year, McGregor narrowly avenged the defeat with a majority-decision victory over Diaz at UFC 202.

Diaz, who hasn’t fought since that UFC 202 loss, earned a reported payday of $2 million for the fight, which also earned both fighters a $50,000 “Fight of the Night” bonus.

As for a potential rubber match, Perez said “McGregor’s not going to have a chance” if Diaz has an injury-free training camp.

Nate should sign for 10mil, Conor for 25. There are intriguing match-ups for Conor but I think all Conor wants to do is fight Nate and call it quits. Which means his last fight so Conor will milk it and hopefully help Nate do the same in order for this fight to go through.

I think Nate will win as long as he's not injured cuz we all saw even at 155, Conor will gas. At 155, Nate is in his best shape.

Diaz III would be the biggest payday.

But Conor vs. Cucuy/Lee, Max or Khabib would do 75-80% of the numbers without having to pay Nate $20 MM.

Nate has almost 750,000 more Twitter followers than all those guys combined. His popularity has continued to increase, even though he's been inactive as a fighter since August 20, 2016. My money would be on Conor fighting GSP if the Nate trilogy falls through, and maybe Conor vs Khabib, but only if it happens in Russia.

Ask for the stars and settle for the moon if you're nate. It helped him negotiate higher pay for the two previous conor fights, so why not do it again? If this is the fight conor wants, the ufc will need to get the deal done since there is a real threat of conor not fighting again. I think Conor likes this fight with his newly learned boxing tricks and thinks he has the advantage. This will obviously be the biggest fight the ufc can put together as well.

I agree, no harm in asking.... Let's be honest, if the UFC comes back and says "We won't do 20, we'll do 15", then good on Nate. All this said, I don't think (from his own mouth) that he feels he will fight this year, we'll see (if the money is right, they'll fight)

Good point. I think Conor understands how important his first match back in MMA is to solidify himself as the MMA fighter most recognizable to the boxing community. He needs that 'combat sports draw' to keep his PPV numbers up.

Do i think its a good fight yes, but in terms of numbers it wouldnt do anywhere near what Mcgregor pulls thats all im saying. So for Diaz to think he deserves 8 figures is ridiculous.

Of course it's an awesome fight. And Diaz should stop chasing mcgregor and fight someone else and get in title contention. It's bullshit how he got a taste of mcgregor money and now he refuses to fight anyone except mcgregor
