I don't know why, but this tree caught my eye during a hike.

Been slacking on getting photos uploaded for this thread.

Took a couple the other night - the stars were out in full force and there was a full moon. Pretty awesome.

A tree from my front yard backlit by the moon:

And I suck at taking pics of the stars - I need to get a different lense for that. But I did my best with what I had. Lengthened exposure with my American flag in the foreground for a patriotic feel. It's a tricky shot with this lense - you have to keep the exposure open long enough to let the stars show up, but if you leave it open too long the stars will appear elongated due to the earth's rotation.

I thought I had already thrown this one up here but I don't see it. I took a hike at dusk and it was dark by the time I got back to camp - again with an awesome full moon to light the way. This was from a couple months ago (no leaves).

For those that don't know, that's an American Sycamore.

Hiked 7 miles in an ancient Hopewell Indian area today. Saw a ton of burial mounds and old earth forts. Pretty cool.

Finished up at a badass area overlooking where the Miami River empties into the Ohio. The area was occupied by the Shawnee Indians up until the early 1800's.

If you listened closely you could hear their warcries as the wind whipped through the trees.

Just kidding. I didn't hear shit. Cool hike though.

The Shawnees were farmers, so in their honor I picked up some corn at a farmer's market (picked this morning) and I'm grilling it up. Tossed on some metts 'cause I need me some meat.

Drove back from Sarasota last night.

For those unfamiliar with southern Florida geography, the path takes me right through the Everglades, a vast fucking swampland crawling with shit that can and will kill you if it gets the chance.

It's the green and light green shit in the below map:

I had my windows down and the AC on the entire time (automatic tolls so I literally didn't roll my window down once), and still a few mosquitoes or whatever the fuck got into my car and bit me. Do not ask me how. I was born in Florida and have lived here most of my life and I couldn't tell you.

If you break down on any of this stretch of I-75 at night and you try to walk to get help, you will die.

Call for help or wait it out till the morning, but don't leave your car. I'm serious.

The "not so great" outdoors.

Oh, and Mix6APlix @Mix6APlix - the SOG pack did good. My 3L bladder fits just fine. Good, simple backpack for a day hike - or even a 1 nighter.

You drove pretty close to where I was a couple weeks ago. I almost flew into Fort Meyers after my flight got delayed and made me get drunk.

Some other pics from the hike...

A badass set of stairs. Ohio does a great job with their state parks. I'm happy to pay my taxes towards their efforts.

Overlook.
It doesn't really show up in the pic - but there is a train bridge down there in the woods. I want to go back with my good camera and get a better shot. It was a pretty cool view. Maybe in the fall.

This is where the Shawnees used to stand to lookout for potential threats (it's a much higher elevation than it looks like in the pic). Back in the early 1800s, Ohio was a very contested area between Indians and the white man. To get your bearings - this pic is taken in SW Ohio looking West. The land across the river is Kentucky, and the land to the right of the river bridge (I-275) is Indiana. So the Shawnees would have been very interested in anyone coming down the river from the East (the left), or attempting to cross the river from Kentucky.

If an approaching party floating down the river stayed towards the Kentucky side of the river, the Shawnees would typically let them pass. This was common, as the settlement in Louisville down river was growing quickly. But if the group stopped on the Kentucky shore they were watched like hawks. And if they were dumb enough to pull ashore on the Ohio side - it was scalping time.

Sorry for the history lesson - it doesn't really have to do with nature or the great outdoors - but it fascinates me.

Makes me wish I got black instead of gray. But utility beats appearance. Glad you like it though. For as much of an ass as I can be (be it intentionally or non intentionally), I generally have good intentions, and like I said, SOG has gotten a lot of my money and I have never been disappointed, and if you do ever need customer service, they are fucking great.

Last year I cut this monster poison ivy vine with a machete. On my return trip I found it leaking this black ooze of death from the cut.

Pure evil. The vine is about as thick as a beer can.

Oh yeah. I get it bad so I'm always careful. This tree needs to come down (it's a dead Ash) so I'm working on getting the vine off of it. Dead vines are easier to remove than live ones - although the dead vines still have the oil in it. There is no way I'm taking a chain saw through an ivy vine. That's just asking for trouble.

I was taking a piss Friday night around 10 PM and a fucking wasp got me a couple times on my neck. Painful shit, and now it is swelling up something horrible. It's hard to turn my head to the left my neck is so swollen. Haha. I grabbed some Benadryl on the way home.

It was cold last night too. No idea what a wasp was doing awake. Maybe I pissed on his home, which if that's the case I can't say I blame him.

Had to take out this dead Ash as it was a little too close to my tent. A young Maple Tree was sacrificed during my efforts. I tried to miss it, but sometimes a tree wants to go where it wants to go.

I've probably cut down 30 or 40 dead Ash trees in the last 5 years.

The leaves are starting to change here in O-HI-O. Love me some fall.

:)

Hopefully the wife's starter is an easy fix tomorrow and I can get my nature on this weekend.

I'm jealous of your colorful leaves.

Man I hope I can get out on a week-long hike this winter.

I'm gonna hit Red River Gorge in early October this year. Should be able to get a ton of fall leaves pics for this thread. It's a beautiful area. Tons of trails.
