I read a couple of articles and head the quotes from Trump and the Governor that made out like Florida is facing the apocalypse, but other info seems to suggest that while it will suck, it's in the same ballpark as Harvey.

Harvey was the worst flooding in United States history. The same ballpark as Harvey would be awful.
Irma could be Andrew all over again.
Irma is the speed of Rita, Katrina, and Wilma in 2005.
This storm is as fast as those and twice as large as the worst Florida storm, Andrew.
It all depends how it hits (wind side vs surge side vs path).

The worst is yet to come. Tampa is unprepared for a hurricane, so we'll see how they deal with one.
A category 3 hurricane in my area knocked out power for 2-3 weeks in 2005.
Let's see what's left of the Keys and then, after Monday, of the Tampa Bay area.
But honestly Tampa is already a shithole.
I wasn't trying to downplay Harvey, it's just that the articles I read made it sound like the whole state was completely stuffed and that this was extraordinary, as opposed to just really, really bad like the others you mentioned.
I thought Irma was a Category 3 and those others were Category 5s though? I know nothing about hurricanes, but I assume that makes them a fair bit more intense.

Irma went 5 to 3 and is back to 4.
Category only describes the wind speeds.
Hurricane Ike is a good example of the deception of focusing on just wind speed.

It was down to category 3 on its way to texas, but it was enormous and the storm surge side hit just right for MASSIVE flash flooding.
Florida might be bad or this could be a catastrophic hit. Florida is an endless construction zone from Miami damn near to Jacksonville. And a lot of that has happened after Wilma, so who knows what things will look like.

Andrew made Florida look like a bomb had gone off for about five years and ushered in new hurricane construction regulations.
Depending on this hit, Irma could be another sentinel event requiring changes like that.
Interesting. Seems like it has the potential to be completely devastating.
