This was my first experience giving a shit about a hurricane, it was informative.

Crazy to think what that fucker would have done if it was as bad as they predicted, lucky it ran out of steam and directly hit less populated areas. I think people wouldn't be too worried about their power and more worried about the fact their house was 3 blocks from where it normally is and underwater.

yo @Readily Formed Voltron you get your power back on yet bro?
Nope. The entire southeast corridor is supposed to be back on by end of the day Sunday.

I was hoping for today as power has been restored a few blocks down from me, but alas...

Hopefully something happens overnight so that I don't have to take another cold shower tomorrow morning.

Mostly tree branches. A few uprooted trees, a few light poles and a few mailboxes destroyed.

I'm 8 miles inland and don't live off a canal so I'm not really affected by storm surge or flooding.

I have a window A.C. unit being powered by a generator, so at least I don't have to sleep in sauna-like conditions (the humidity at night here is 90%).

Only bad thing is the cold showers.

IschKabibble @IschKabibble @Rhino what's the situation like in Orlando?

You guys have Duke Energy or some shit as your power utility, right?

Chief @Chief what about Jacksonville? You have FPL like me, right?
I've got Duke.... which means I have no power. You could find qualified MMA judges and a legitimate excuse for Jon Jones failed drug test in Orlando easier than you can find a Duke Energy truck.... it's ridiculous

There's a pole and a power line down in my neighborhood so that may be why I still don't have power.

That makes sense... You wanna know what's down in my neighborhood? Palm fronds.... and not a DAMN thing else.... and not a Duke Energy truck to be found ANYWHERE, nor their website, telephone, homing pigeons active.... but they sure can tweet their "workers" shining happy smiling stock photo pictures saying they are hard at work.

We have our own utility called Jacksonville Electric Authority (where I work). Lots of folks still without power and water and there was a lot of flooding.

I made out ok. Was able to go home last night and survey the damage (had to stay at work for the hurricane). A neighbor's pine landed in my back yard but missed the house. A lot of neighbors have trees on their roofs. I never lost power. Wife said the lights flickered is all. Still no internet (Comcast).

How about you?

Besides obviously your job, do you think there are more advantages to having a local power utility or a larger one like FPL?

Duke is technically bigger than FPL, but they're not as big in FL, which is maybe why their service sucks.

Also, how are power utility contracts awarded? I thought FPL had all of Florida until recently.

Well so much is in flux here in Jacksonville as far as power because we are phasing out coal. We have to huge coal-fired plants as well as several natural gas plants. One of our coal plants is co-owned by the city and FPL which is being shutdown but there are no FPL employees in the city. We just give them a % of megawatts. We maintain all of our generators, transmission lines, substations and have our own fleet. We also are water and sewage.

I think the advantage is that we really care about our community. We are very highly rated in customer service and really try to please every individual customer. Duval county only has just under a million people I think.

I'm not sure how the politics work as far as a private company wanting to provide power to the city. I know we provide power to smaller counties who don't have their own plants.

My boss actually leaves next week to go and work for Duke in Virginia.
