I wonder how these things come about. Does he like call the White House? "Hey, I got some things to say." or do they go "This is too much. Get McConaughey, only he can save us!" ?
If you continue to bad mouth McConaughey we are going to have a problem, sir!

Fuck cost. Raise my taxes for this. I’m in. And this should only be step one of what we do to help and protect our children.

And if you want to work on something to prevent drownings or keep kids safer in car accidents I’m in for that, too. But we are still going to do this, also.
"raise my taxes"?

are you serious? That's the extent of social cost that you can conceptualize? What's the cost of imprisoning a couple hundred thousand perfectly law-abiding people who would have never committed a crime? What's the emotional cost to their families?

First of all, no has to raise your taxes, you can donate all your "privilege capital" to the government directly.
Second, making a black market of weapons isn't going to protect our children.

"let's do the Drug War again, but with guns this time".

I actually agree with everything (although need an accurate definition on "assault weapon") except the liability of gun manufacturers. That makes zero sense.
Ban Assault Weapons and High Capacity magazines:
How, and what will it cost? How will we overcome the Iron Law of Prohibitions?

Strengthen Background Checks
in what way? is this code for Universal Background Checks and/or National Gun Registry? How does that stop any of the these events from happening?

Enact Safe Storage and Red Flag laws
Details. How are you going to catch these 1-in-100 Million killers without depriving millions of others of their right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness? How are we going to prevent selective enforcement and abuses of power?

Repeal Gun Manufacturers Immunity from Liability
LoL - let's start with repealing the gov'ts immunity from liability, AKA Qualified Immunity reform. Let's repeal Big Pharma and the Military's "immunity from liability". This 'ban by bankruptcy' is what Texas and other states are trying to do with abortion, and it's a perversion of the civil legal system.

I haven’t watched the speech but read some of the angry pro gun community responses… did he mention Uvalde is his home town? It’s not like he is just some random Hollywood persona

and all that DoD money is going to mental health care and social justice.
You want to put billions of tax payer money into healthcare and social programs? Sounds like a great idea to me but doesn’t seem consistent with your views about limited govt and libertarianism

this is all theater to change the election narrative from "economy" to "guns" or "abortion". It's an appeal to single-issue voters, and if the Dems get swept out of power in mid-terms, it'll be their rallying cry for 2024.

It's like "$15/hr minimum wage" or "single-payer HealthCare".

they ruckus about it for a couple months before an election, but they know it's bad policy...'bad' meaning it will get in the way of re-election.

I didn't say I wanted the FedGov and their parasitic bureaucracy to administer it.

But who else would tax the citizens to pay for it all?
this is a much broader discussion of how the Information Age is changing the structure and function of government.

but i'm a bleeding-heart libertarian, and I think there are tax models that de-incentivize the hedonic treadmill, and charity-based organizational structures that would better serve the greater good. Liberty >> Freedom.

All these artifices of government are in place to protect an Us from a Them. But if we're all a connected species, there isn't really a Them any more. So then the gov't has to go in the business of manipulating information to perpetuate the existence of Them.

I'm going to bet it started when his agent and/or publicist heard "Uvalde, TX" on the news.

An 18 year old that can’t wait 2 years to buy an assault rifle is probably not going to be your average law abiding citizen that would have otherwise never committed a crime.

Just sayin’

Yeah, cuz it couldn’t have been him feeling emotional about his elementary school being shot up and all those kids being murdered.

It was a pretty awesome speech. The dudes an actor, but its not hard to believe his tears were real when he was saying stuff like a girl had to be identified by her green shoes since her head had been decapitated
