It's one of those life choices made by intelligent, even intellectual people, that baffle me.

Wealthy. Had his glory days.
Given the same position- old, wealthy, had a distinguished career- you won't see me or hear me. I'll support with donations and enjoy my final years without making an international embarrassment of myself.

Cults must make intelligent people dim. They have the same cognitive abilities but choose fantasy over clarity of thought.

I suppose I want the explanation to be more than it is, that shutting down someone's critical thinking isn't that easy.

If I was Rudy, I would have finished my term after 9/11, retired from politics, joined a few corporate boards to earn a few million a year for doing absolutely fucking nothing, and basically just spent the rest of my life being the king of New York, eating for free everywhere I went, being invited to an endless list of cool events, doing after-dinner speeches for $200k/appearance, etc etc etc.

Instead of that, look at the state of him.

And then realise that he legitimately fits into the current Republican Party MUCH better than Mitt Romney does, and think about how fucking terrifying that reality actually is.
