Been watching The Godfather.
This film is so fucking good. No scene wasted, everything advances the story.
I just noticed for the first time that as Luca Brasi enters the bar where he's whacked, the camera shifts and we see him through a window that has decorative fish.
If you don't know the film, Brasi's tactical vest is sent to the Corleones with a fish in it.
"It's an old Sicilian message: Luca Brasi sleeps with the fishes."

Haven't seen in at least a decade, but know the story and beats well enough. Now I watch for cinematography, lighting, the way the scene is framed.
And I'm noticing little things.
When Michael finds out his father has been shot, he goes to a phone booth. As he shuts the door on Kay, he turns to the phone and family business.
That might be foreknowledge informing my viewing.
This film is indeed a masterpiece. Casting, acting, excellent. The screenplay is tight and compelling. The pacing keeps your attention.
I'll be watching part 2 soon, and that'll be more of a bummer to watch as Michael descends into evil.

Growing up I always thought Goodfellas and Casino were the gold standard of mob movies until I finally watched The Godfather. You guys agree with the standard line that Godfather II is the best in the trilogy?
Personally, my favorite mob movie is Goodfellas. But I'm able to recognize that it isn't in the same class of film making as The Godfather. I know a lot of people believe 2 to be the best, I don't agree. I prefer 1, although part of that is my bias that without 1 there would be no 2.
Hot take: 3 isn't nearly as bad as people say it is and if it were made as a stand alone movie rather than having to follow up after 1 and 2, people would think much more highly of it.
My favourite mob flicks are goodfellas and casino. I like the Godfather I just prefer the other two.
