Oh no! Russia won't be able to attack Ukraine easily in the future if they join the EU...
So all of a sudden this isn't about Russia's sovereign security from NATO and our missile shield that could be offensive, or Russian genocide in the east, but Russia's requirement that everybody around them be pliable enough that Russia can invade anytime.
EU countries represent massive arm sales to Russia as well as massive trade. There's simply no threat to Russia from Ukraine joining the EU. Only a threat to Russia's geopolitical aims.

I'm not making a value judgment, I'm pointing out that if they're concerned about Ukraine being armed by NATO it's not exactly a long leap to think that they might not want EU running weapons in either particularly after what's happened over the last few weeks with Poland. Based on what we've seen over the last 3 weeks trying to sell "The Ruskies are planning to take over Europe!" is a much farther reach.
