Russia, China, Iran and Pakistan will retain fully staffed embassies in Kabul as per the recent negotiations between the Taliban diplomatic delegation and the Russian and Chinese governments that I posted about here a few weeks ago. As I mentioned then, the Taliban is seeking full integration into the Russia/China Eurasian project...

The Western media seems kinda bummed that there hasn't been a wide scale Afghan on Afghan bloodbath.

Pakistan frees Taliban co-founder at US request; will play constructive role in Afghan peace initiative
Pakistan released Taliban co-founder Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar at US’ request to help expedite the Afghan peace talks. It is believed that the senior Taliban leader could also play a constructive role in the Afghan peace initiative

The real story here imvho, is that China has won the prize, access to Afghanistan's vast mineral resources, lithium, copper etc. And it has done so using soft power. Probably a lesson in there for us somewhere if we care to dig around.

afghanistan was losing battle from the getco

they really don't have much options... US influenced government, tribal warlords, or the taliban. they all suck.

it doesn't matter when they do the withdraw, it would have been same story if they did it in 2001, 2008, 2014, or 2021, the Taliban will gain full power as soon as the US combat troop is gone.

what they should have focused is how to safely re-locate the personnels who fought alongside the US

it'll be interesting to see what will happen next few weeks or days, Taliban could inflict heavy casualty to the new troops who are supposed to be security for the remaining personnel and suck em right back into staying
