I love stats like that. Take away every single one of Gretsky's goals and he's still the NHL's all time points leader, that type of shit.

A discussion about maple syrup was brought about by someone claiming that it smells like urine.

I googly'd up this treat.

Maple syrup urine disease (MSUD), or maple syrup syndrome, is a type of metabolic disorder that affects the way your body converts food into energy. People with MSUD can't break down certain amino acids from proteins because their bodies don't produce the necessary enzymes.

Jerry Rice is one of the only football players who, after the age of 40, caught a pass in the NFL. Altogether he had 2,169 yards for 161 completed catches, and 10 receiving touchdowns.

There are only two other players to ever catch passes over the age of 40. Those two combined only received FOUR yards total and no touchdowns completed.
One of those is Brett Favre who ended with a NEGATIVE two yards for his one pass received.
The other is Tom Brady who made 6 yards received.

Jerry Rice is a freak.

Jerry Rice is a freak.
I recall marveling at his reception ability, hauling down passes like he'd put glue on his gloves.
So much "Holy SHIT!" in one athlete.

Looking at the ingredients on some natural cough syrup for the kids. Marshmallow was the third ingredient. Marshmallow root to be exact, but emphasis on marshmallow.
Here's what I learned.

Marshmallow root (Althaea officinalis) is a perennial herb that’s native to Europe, Western Asia, and Northern Africa. It’s been used as a folk remedy for thousands of years to treat digestive, respiratory, and skin conditions.

Its healing powers are due in part to the mucilage it contains. It’s typically consumed in capsule, tincture, or tea form. It’s also used in skin products and cough syrups.

Which got me wondering why marshmallows are called marshmallows.

The fluffy candy is very appropriately named after the mallow plant, which is native to salty marshes in Asia and Europe. The combination of the plant's name and the environment in which it grows led to the term marshmallow. The roots of the mallow plant can be squeezed to harvest a gooey sap.

That's fantastic; I've always lamented that I'll never know what real marshmallow tastes like.

Today I learned the term "toyetic".

"Toyetic is a term referring to the suitability of a media property, such as a cartoon or movie, for merchandising tie-in lines of licensed toys, games and novelties."

Batman and Robin being a good example: many story elements were specifically written into the script so they could sell toys. One advertiser had people on set to suggest changes that could produce more toys.

Today I Learned

that the iconic red Swingline Stapler did not exist when Office Space was made. Mike Judge took 4 staplers to an auto body shop and had them painted red (so the stapler would show up better on film). Several years later, Swingline decided to start producing the stapler, and it's now their highest selling product...entirely due to product placement, for which they paid nothing, of a product that didn't exist.

Of the 4 original staplers, 2 were destroyed in production, Mike Judge has one, and Stephen Root (Milton) has one.
