I don't think I've ever seen a crappie that big before.

Do you catch bigger ones later in the year? Seems like the panfish I catch in September and October are always twice the size of the ones in spring and summer.
Yes. One, they're spawning right now...the females I'm catching are full of eggs, so I'm throwing a lot back. Two, they're eating up for the winter. I tend to catch the majority of crappie (and bigger crappie) when the dogwoods start blooming in the Spring (mid to late April), and right now in late Oct when the leaves start falling.

It's tough sledding in the summer. I was able to catch them all summer long, but I really had to work for it. Finding sunken brush piles in 15 to 20 ft of water.

I have it easier than most too. My wife and I bought a lot on an 81acre private lake (with gated entrance) that's been there for 50 years, and it gets virtually no fishing pressure. There are maybe 40 houses built on the lake, but no one fishes it. It's crazy. I fished it probably 25 times this year and saw someone else fishing two times. So I'm not fishing public lakes & river systems that get constant fishing pressure.

The only reason we bought the lot was for the lake access. Literally sight unseen...didn't even know if it was buildable. My parents lived on the lake 30 years ago and I fished it all the time, which is when I found out how good it is. I always said I wanted to live there (which didn't happen), so this is the next best thing. It's 13 miles from our house.

I'm usually after them from April until about now since I use them for flathead bait and yea, it seems like during the summer they can be harder to find and catch than the big catfish.

Sometime this winter I think I'm going to try to rig up some sort of a bait tank with an old cattle watering trough and a pond filter so hopefully I can keep a few dozen alive and ready to go instead of always having to rely on catching them immediately before a catfishing trip.

Late start to the cold. Not thick enough to drive in yet here. But no reason to anyway it's a smaller lake and the walk out is good for the soul.

Fished for about 4 hours today and didn’t catch a keeper. Caught about 8-10 crappie but none over 8” long. Water temp was 44 deg, air temp 53 and wind was up a bit. Fish were shut off. Even the ones that I caught were such a light bite.

Absolutely man. It has been in the 30’s here and then temps jumped into the 50’s for a week. Theyre saying tomorrow is the last good day, so I’m gonna go pull the boat out of the water & probably be done until late March/April.

Forgot to mention the water was murky as shit from a couple inches of rain yesterday. Rough day out there.

You doing any good on the ice?
