What if he was a hero? Racist statements as he has made could've come from your grand parents/ancestors just the same. Most US presidents are responsible for many of deaths, many world leaders are, especially then. Why is he the bad guy, especially if you consider his role in WWII. Compared to other world leaders back then, he was a hero. As much as they can be a hero. Context.
My grandparents/ancestors didn't starve millions of people in Bengal.
They didn't create a paramilitary force which used arbitrary force on civilians in Ireland in reprisal for IRA attacks.
Didn't cut down every POW he captured in Afghanistan because the Pashtun's need to recognize the 'superiority of race'.
Didn't order the British army to shoot civilians that turned out in protest in Greece in 1944.
Or help to create death squads to hunt down the partisans that had defeated the Nazi's in Greece.
They also didn't organize a coup, of the democratically elected government, in Iran to keep their profits from oil extraction in 1953.
Didn't order the indiscriminate bombing of civilians in Iraq when they rose up against British rule in the 1920s.
Didn't create concentration camps for 150k people in Kenya, didn't shut their children's schools because they were 'training grounds for rebellion'.
Or circumvent international treaties to put those Kenyan prisoners into forced labour.
Maybe yours did and that's why you aren't that plussed about it.
