I'm already discovering the awesomeness of baseball and becoming a "Major" fan, but this weekend I bought my sons some baseball gloves and we went and found a nice little league sized ballpark. We had SO much fun. Did a little of everything, pitched, caught, hit.

The fences were 200 feet at the shortest distance but the mound looked to be the standard 90'. I have a newfound appreciation for MLB players and their skills. I'm not bad at making contact(granted I'm not getting mlb type pitches) but getting distance was hard.

I wonder if I had an adult throwing me fastballs how much that could have helped. Probably less contact and more swings at air, but surely a faster thrown ball would result in further travel when hit.

Educate me. On grandpa and grandson, and son if that's also pertinant.
Yaztremski was a legend in Red Sox lore
Don’t know about son, but his grandson plays for the giants

I was mad at him for making the last out I’m the Bucky dent game....for no reason other than he popped up and it ended.

Only after Ortiz took over in 2004, was i a believer

Is that a base hit or an error when it's a pop fly and it should be an automatic out, but the outfielder can't see it b/c the son is in his eyes? I'm assuming it's a base hit b/c he doesn't get a glove on it but I also wouldn't be surprised if it's an error as it could be considered a catchable ball.

Also another question if someone could answer-

I know this would be super rare and perhaps never has happened before(although I bet it probably happened in the early 1900's), but what if there's a man on 3rd base, and he attempts to steal home, and when he's stealing home the pitcher's pitch ends up being wild and hit's the batter?

Does the catcher still have to retrieve the ball and tag him out, or does the runner have to go back to 3rd?

He doubled in the 1st
Next 3 batters: K, foul out, ground out

He singled in the 3rd
Got caught stealing 2nd

Doubled in the 5th
Scored after a couple singles

Doubed in the 6th
Next 3 batters: K, walk, flied out, lined out

Singled in 8th
Moved to 2nd on a single.
Next batted ball he was forced out at 3rd

Doubled in the 10th
Bogaerts grounded to 2nd base, Devers got caught in a rundown between 3rd and home.
Good stuff. I went with the assumed "no support" but when it's broken down like this, it highlights his weakness he could work on is base running.

Although I've never played organized baseball in real life, I'm in my 2nd season with my 6'10 created player in MLB the Show and currently sitting on 78 stolen bases with 20 games still left to play, against only 11 times caught stealing so I think I know a thing or 2 and could probably give a lot of these MLB home run hitters some tips and pointers on base running. :D

The Yankees are in first place, they're beating the dodgers, and the red sux won't even make the playoffs.

All is well.

Ball is dead when it hits the batter.

Runners return to the base they were on before the pitch was thrown. If the hit batter taking 1st base forces them to vacate their base, they advance one base.

Ball isn't in play again until the pitcher steps on the rubber.

Hey Hauler @Hauler ... You think anyone is going to pick up Scooter since he's already been released?
He used to be a really good hitter. Decent middle infielder with a little bit of pop. I'm sure he gets invited to someone's camp next year, but his 2019 campaign might be done.

Batting average:
.295 in 2017
.310 in 2018
.226 in 2019

I'm thinking he never quite healed up from that groin injury in spring training and came back too soon.

If it's a routine play that isn't made and a runner advances a base because of the poor play, it's an error.

The rulings can be very subjective though. They are always judgment calls. But "The sun was in my eyes" didn't work on Pop in "The Natural", and it doesn't work with the official scorekeeper.

Shield the sun with your glove and catch the fucking ball.

Miami has hit 111 home runs this season. The Yankees have hit 70 this month.
Miami is really, really bad - Reds are about to finish off a 4 game sweep against them tonight.

You should watch the game and check out the Yankees future 3rd baseman Eugenio Suarez. He's hit a HR in 4 straight games and is up to 38 on the season. Although the Reds have him signed through 2025 so it will cost the Yanks some prospects.

You seem like you would know for sure. I asked someone else this question before I saw this answer and they told me it's a live ball and the catcher has to retrieve the ball and tag him. Your answer is the opposite and I'm going to side with you, but before I correct my friend, can you source your answer?

15 years of playing the game, mostly as a pitcher and a catcher.

Plus if you watch any HBP, the ump will raise both hands. That signifies a dead ball and play has stopped.

But I can dig up the actual rule for ya when I get to a computer.

A twist that I don't know the rule on is if the pitch hit the RUNNER. I think that ball would be live, but I don't know for sure.

Unless the runner crossed the line and then it would be interference and the runner would be out.

I think?

What line? The basepath?
I'm actually quite intrigued by this.

1 out. Runner on 3rd. Left handed batter.
Let's say it's a 5 run game in the 9th so the pitcher goes into a full wind up because who gives a shit about the guy on 3rd...runner heads home.

The batter doesn't swing and the pitch hits the runner.

I assume if he touches home before the ball hits him = runner safe, run scored.

But what is the call on the pitch if it was in the strike zone?

What if the ball hits the runner before he touches home? Live ball? Runners interference?

What if the batter swings, pops the ball straight into the air and the runner slides into home and takes out the catcher who was positioning himself to catch the fly ball over home plate?

So many questions.
