Both of you are right. They should be doing a much better job of promoting health, but trying to fat shame your way out of a pandemic isn't going to work. Fear mongering and telling 42% of American adults that they are going to die because they are fat may not be a great idea.

A lot of the underlying conditions that kill people with corona are also correlated with obesity - it's not the obesity in and of itself that is likely the main problem. So doing a campaign based just on a simplistic BMI could have bad mental health impacts. There are people in the obese BMI category who are otherwise relatively healthy and at low-risk, so it's not a great overall health strategy to scare these people. You would have to be careful about the messaging.

Also, Bill Maher has always had an anti-fatty shtick, so he is just scraping that barrel again. It doesn't mean he is wrong, but the dude is a senior citizen celebrity who probably has body dysmorphia and projects some of that self-hate on to fatties.
Obesity leads to the underlying issues that lead to death. Obese people who are otherwise healthy are the exception not the rule. Stop being a science denier.

Point remains, goof.
It's not a practical solution. And the government would be heavily criticized for advocating "fat shaming".

I'm not saying that making lifestyle changes in five months wouldn't help a person build a stronger immune system to fight covid because it absolutely would.

It's just not practical enough to advocate.

How is it not practical for Fauci to get on TV and say "The best longterm solution is a healthier America. Over this time eat better and use some of your time at home to exercise." ?

It would be... But Trump's fat ass would then do another commercial for Goya and talk about how much he loves KFC and negate any of the positive that Fauci may have put out into the world.

Not practical for the population. People aren't going to do it.

You should give me a pass because Till tore his MCL in round 2.

Healthy knee Till wins that fight.
The time honored tradtion of SN bets is that the loser tags or PM's the winner and asks for their new name. Typically when someone does this I give them clemency. In your case, you've avoided it and now are saying "It's null and void 10 day rule." So now I have to make a thread asking the other users what your new name should be.

p.s. It's only day 9 anyways.

  • Economists at Yale University found no evidence that the $600 weekly jobless benefits Congress authorized in March reduced employment.
  • A study from the Chicago Fed had similar findings.
  • The studies' results directly challenge a claim frequently made by Republican lawmakers and members of the Trump administration that the extra unemployment payments decreased people's desire to reenter the workforce.

Even by your standards this is exceptionally poor reading comprehension. I acknowledged that obesity correlates with the underlying issues that lead to corona related death (no shit). And I never said obese people that are relatively healthy is the 'rule' or the majority, I just said 'there are people'.

A BMI of 30 is obese. It doesn't take into consideration muscle mass.

Many MMA HWs are obese and I'm not just talking Roy Nelson. If you are 6 foot and 222 pounds, you are obese. If you are 6'3 and 245 pounds, you are obese.

Francis Ngannou is obese. But it's not just phyiscal freaks. Fabricio Werdum is periodically obese on weigh in day. He came in just under obese vs Gus but was obese when he fought Volkov.
