LOL. It's not a pretentious word, it's a very commonly used word. Its most directly interchangeable synonym would be 'chauvinism', which is more pretentious and is more confusing because in common parlance it usually refers to sexism. So 'jingoism' is the simplest way to get the meaning across, not the most pretentious.

And a little tip for the future - if you're going to get defensive about someone discussing racism, don't simultaneously get defensive about the usage of a common term. Nobody likes to be a walking stereotype.
